Howard Community College to Maintain Blended Learning Environment for Winter/Spring Classes

With Hybrid, Scheduled Remote, and Online Classes, Students Have Options That Fit Their Schedules and Learning Styles

Columbia, MD – Howard Community College will maintain its blended learning environment for the upcoming winter and spring terms. By continuing the modes of learning that have been in place this fall, the college will ensure some in-person instruction is available for hands-on experiences or in-person labs, while also providing virtual courses that fit student learning styles and schedules. The plan for winter and spring applies to both credit and noncredit classes.

“In light of the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic, Howard Community College’s decision about the winter and spring terms ensures the continued focus on the health, safety, and well-being of students, faculty, and staff,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president. “The college community continues to serve our students during these challenging times and remain dedicated to the mission of providing pathways to success.”

Of the three formats available for fall, hybrid classes provide students with instruction both on campus and online. The college is expanding its offerings for winter and spring, focused on classes that benefit most from on-campus instruction. The location for hybrid classes is listed in the schedule as Main Campus. Scheduled remote classes meet at designated times in a virtual classroom. These classes typically list the location as Scheduled Zoom, since most will be taught via Zoom videoconferencing. Online courses allow students to learn on their own time. Recorded lectures will be posted for students to watch at times that work best for them, but there will still be due dates. Online is listed as the location for these classes.

The winter and spring schedule of classes will be available for viewing online on October 20, 2020. Registration will open for all current and prospective students on November 10.

To apply, search for classes, and register, visit For support throughout the enrollment and registration process, academic advisors are available to provide customized guidance and support. Email with any questions or to schedule a call or Zoom appointment. .

As there continue to be restrictions regarding large, in-person events, the college has decided that it cannot safely hold an in-person commencement ceremony in December for the graduates who would have participated in the May 2020 ceremony. To give these graduates their well-deserved celebration, the college will instead hold a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, December 16, 2020.

The college will be in contact with all graduates who would have participated in the May 2020 ceremony about this new opportunity to make their commencement as special as can be. This year’s commencement speaker will be Kurt Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore and former mayor of Baltimore.

Safe Operations

Based on the college’s recovery and reopening plan, the college remains in phase two of operations, which means most services will continue to be offered remotely. There will be select services open to students and the community by appointment only. More information, and any updates or changes to operations are available on the college’s coronavirus website.
