Howard Community College to Graduate Its Largest Class Ever on Tuesday, May 20

As the number of credit students enrolled at Howard Community College (HCC) steadily increases each year, so does the number of graduates and credentials earned during the academic year.

HCC will graduate the largest class in its history on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Merriweather Post Pavilion. There are a total of 1,196 candidates in the college’s 43rd graduating class, and nearly 500 are expected to participate in the May commencement ceremony. It is expected a total of 1,280 degrees/certificates will have been earned this 2013-2014 academic year. The size of the graduating class, as well as the number of credentials earned, increased about nine percent compared to last year.

One of the most respected thought leaders and architects of higher education policy in the nation, Dr. Danette G. Howard, will serve as keynote speaker for the May 20 commencement ceremony. Dr. Howard recently joined Lumina Foundation, an internationally renowned higher-education foundation, as vice president for policy and mobilization. Before joining Lumina, she served as secretary of higher education for the State of Maryland, and led the postsecondary education coordinating agency, the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

Dr. Howard has also served as the assistant director of higher education policy at the Education Trust, an organization committed to closing achievement gaps from pre-kindergarten through college for low-income and minority students. Dr. Howard is an alumna of Howard University, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and a Ph.D. in higher education policy from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Prior to the 2 p.m. commencement ceremony, the 2014 Nursing Recognition and Pinning Ceremony honoring HCC graduating nurses will be held at 10 a.m. at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
