Howard Community College President Kate Hetherington Named 2014 Northeast Region CEO

Association of Community College Trustees to Present Honor at Fall Conference

Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of Howard Community College (HCC), was recently selected as the 2014 Northeast Region Chief Executive Officer by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The award recognizes the contributions and leadership of Dr. Hetherington. She will receive the award at the ACCT Awards Gala in October.

Located in Washington, DC, ACCT is a nonprofit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States. The Northeast Region of ACCT includes the northeastern states in the United States and Canada. Through Dr. Hetherington’s regional award win, she will be nominated for the national CEO award.

“Dr. Kate Hetherington is a thoughtful and innovative leader of Howard Community College,” said Edmund “Skip” Coale III, chair of the Board of Trustees of Howard Community College. “Since joining the Howard Community College Board of Trustees, I have been impressed by Dr. Hetherington’s leadership that has transformed HCC into a national model of higher educational excellence.”

A community college graduate, Dr. Hetherington has served as president of HCC since 2007, leading an institution nationally recognized for its strong academic programs, innovative approaches to instruction, and strong student support services. Under her leadership, HCC has grown to 30,000 credit and noncredit students. Currently, one out of four graduates of the Howard County Public School System enrolls at HCC immediately after graduation.

“It is an honor to be recognized by a committee of fellow presidents and trustees throughout my region,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of Howard Community College. “As a community college graduate, I have always been passionate about community colleges providing pathways for students to succeed, but as a community college leader, I am proud of transformative effect that community colleges have on their communities.”

Student-centered in her leadership, Dr. Hetherington is an advocate for learning and success, which contributed to HCC’s largest graduating class ever in 2014. She is committed to enhancing curriculum to strengthen students’ abilities, specifically adding new academic programs in high-demand fields and focusing faculty and staff on increasing completion among students. In 2013, the Governor of Maryland appointed Dr. Hetherington to serve a two-year term on the Maryland Education Council (Education Commission of the States).

Prior to her presidency, Dr. Hetherington served HCC as the executive vice president of student services and capital campaign manager, having been promoted from vice president of student services. Before joining HCC, she held progressively responsible positions at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Dr. Hetherington holds a doctorate in higher education leadership from Widener University, a master’s degree in counseling and human relations from Villanova University, and a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Pennsylvania State University.
