Howard Community College Presents: HCC Dance Student Showcase November 17-18
Columbia, MD – The Howard Community College Dance Program presents the HCC Dance Student Showcase. The performances will take place in HCC’s Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA), on November 17 and 18. Directed by dance faculty, Elizabeth Higgins, the HCC Dance Student Showcase features the creative explorations of eight student choreographers with a diverse range of ideas and styles.
In "The Bystander Effect," Zoe Carr uses contemporary modern movement and minimalistic music to question the realities of society. Jasper Breslin’s piece gives a new perspective on the inner workings of the human mind; the good, the bad, and the downright bizarre. Jess Powell uses contemporary movement to shine a light on the trials of finding one’s identity in a conformist society. Through spoken word and ambient noise, Sylvia Lagas’ piece exemplifies pain and its powerful effects on people.
There are two solos on the program that incorporate the use of props. Katy Love examines the journey and obstacles we face in achieving our dreams as she follows the line of her tautly stretched rope. Emily Fuller takes an abstract approach as she explores the many unconventional uses of a chair. In a very different style, Jazzee Stowers dances in her own quintet fusing Bhangra with Bollywood, Bharatanatyam, belly dance and modern dance in her work “Elegant Excitement.” In a trio, Sara Ciniero has her dancers push physical boundaries through a visualization of music.
Performances are November 17 at 3 p.m. and November 18 at 7 p.m. in HCC’s Smith Theatre, located in the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA), 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland.
