Howard Community College Presents Dance Festival Gala Concert

Event is part of two-day Howard County Community Dance Festival

Columbia, MD – Continuing the tradition of bringing compelling dance to the greater Baltimore region, the Howard Community College (HCC) Dance Company presents the 11th annual Howard County Community Dance Festival Gala Concert, a captivatingly eclectic event, featuring the work of professional artists from New York City, District of Columbia, and Baltimore areas along with the HCC dance program. The concert, supported by the Howard County Arts Council, will take place February 9, 2019, in the college’s Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA).

Gala performers and choreographers will boldly explore themes and subjects of the natural world, as well as the social, cultural, and physical capacities of the human experience. The classical Indian dance company, Jayamangala, known to connect with audiences through group synchronicity, colorful costumes, and melodious music, will present two choreographies from director Shobha Subramanian and company dancers, Tillana and Tarana. In addition, LucidBeings Dance directors Frank Graham and Jeanna Riscigno will present an excerpt, “Tundra from Edge Effect,” a work exploring the naturally occurring phenomena of overlapping eco systems that create a more diverse environment of harmonious cohabitation. Ryan Bailey, who appeared on Season 14 of the hit television show, “So You Think You Can Dance,” brings his unique aesthetic and dynamic personality in his premiere solo performance of “A Sad Boy.” Representing the HCC dance program are Joan Nicholas-Walker premiering “Who, Tow” and Jes Powell’s “SHE.” Rounding out the program is Mat Elder, a New York- based choreographer presenting excerpts from a compelling collection of recent works.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on February 9, 2019, in HCC’s Smith Theatre, located within Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland. The event is part of the two-day Howard County Community Dance Festival, which serves area dancers as young as 11 years old.

Tickets are $10 for general admission. For tickets and more information, visit or call 443-518-1500. Box office hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12-5 p.m. and 90 minutes before show time.
