Howard Community College Opens a Family Study Room
Howard Community College (HCC) expands its services that support all students with the recent opening of the Family Study Room.
The family-friendly space is housed in the on-campus library and was the vision of President Daria J. Willis, who was herself a parent in college. HCC estimates that one in four of its students have children living at home with them.
The Family Study Room has computers, whiteboards, comfortable seating, a 50-inch television, a DVD player, a digital touch table, books, games, magazines, and more. The room is open during library hours and is available by reservation or walk in (if the room is not at capacity).
The new Family Study Room creates a safe place for parents to spend time studying while keeping their children occupied. “I want all my student parents at HCC to feel welcome here,” Willis says, “as we believe in providing a two-generational approach to educating the whole family.” Children are also welcome at HCC athletic events, special art events, and the college will be handing out custom coloring books, stickers, and stuffed dragons (Duncan is HCC’s mascot) at commencement this year.
Howard Community College is committed to providing support and resources to all students for academic, career, and employment success.
