Howard Community College announces the appointment of Dr. Melissa Curtis as the vice president of student success and Dr. Carl S. Moore as the vice president of teaching and learning. Both Dr. Curtis and Dr. Moore bring extensive experience to Howard Community College, each with careers spanning more than 20 years in higher education. They will begin their new roles on August 1, 2022.
Dr. Melissa Curtis – Vice President of Student Success
Dr. Curtis has more than 22 years of higher education experience, spanning both academic and student affairs. She has most recently served as associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at Austin Community College, leading enrollment strategies for the district’s 11 campuses. Austin Community College has been recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution, an Achieving the Dream Leader College, and among the top 150 for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Dr. Curtis has also held positions as dean of student affairs and director of college connection, an award-winning program that increased college enrollment from the region’s 26 school districts. Dr. Curtis began her higher education career as an English professor at Central Texas College, where she dedicated herself to improving college access and degree attainment of underrepresented students.
A recognized coalition builder, Dr. Curtis nurtures partnerships within the educational ecosystem. Her service has included seats on the YMCA Austin Metropolitan Board, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce Education Council, the Education Equals Economics (E3) Alliance Blueprint Leadership Council, and the Austin College Attainment Network. Nationally, she has served on the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) Students in Need in Community Colleges Advisory Board as well as the Higher Education Research and Development Institute (HERDI) South Advisory Board. Dr. Curtis is a published author and has presented nationally on emergency aid, equity in strategic enrollment management, and student affairs change management.
Dr. Curtis earned her Ph.D. in educational administration at the University of Texas at Austin, her M.F.A. in creative writing from Texas State University, and her B.A. in oral tradition in African and American literature from Vassar College.
Dr. Carl S. Moore – Vice President for Teaching and Learning
Dr. Moore was formerly the associate vice president for learning engagement at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). He also serves as certificate faculty in Temple University’s Teaching in Higher Education Certificate program, teaching faculty for USC’s Equity Research Institute, and a board member for the Online Learning Consortium. He is a peer evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and a frequent speaker and consultant on inclusion, leadership, faculty development, and teaching and learning topics. He has a doctorate in urban education (interdisciplinary education) from Temple University and a Master of Arts from The Ohio State University in higher education administration. His dissertation investigated how exemplary college faculty employ universal design for learning principles in their teaching practices.
With more than 20 years of experience in higher education and 15 years teaching, Dr. Moore has maintained appointments across all levels of faculty, serving in instructional, adjunct, and tenure-track roles. He has also created and instructed a variety of courses in education at The Ohio State University, Temple University, Cabrini College, and Arcadia University in both face-to-face and online formats.
For the past several years, he has dedicated his career to advancing the field of faculty development. He served as a department chair at UDC, assistant director of the Teaching and Learning Center at Temple University, conference chair and board member for the POD Network, and board member for the Online Learning Consortium. Alongside his career in academic affairs, Dr. Moore has also served in a number of student services leadership roles charged with enhancing student success. These roles entailed work in advising, retention, multicultural affairs, and TRIO programs. As a self-described “techie” and advocate for mission alignment, Dr. Moore’s passions lie in leveraging technology to enhance student learning and business outcomes.
