Howard Community College Named One of Top Tech-Savvy Community Colleges

HCC recognized as a leader in innovative uses of technology in student learning environments

Columbia, MD – Howard Community College (HCC) has been named one of the top-rated community colleges nationwide in the 11th annual Digital Community Colleges Survey by the Center for Digital Education. HCC tied for second place in the large community college category. The center recognized HCC for using data to improve decisions, providing professional development to assist faculty in the use of technology, and creating robust online and mobile environments for students.

The Digital Community College Survey examines areas of digital and emerging technologies, such as the integration of mobile devices and technology into curriculum; strategic planning and data management; and professional development, including availability of technology tools and training for faculty and students. In addition, the survey looked at community colleges’ technology priorities, infrastructure and networks, collaboration and outreach efforts, and use of technology innovations.

Among HCC’s recent technology advances and innovations are its new, user-friendly website with a mobile-responsive design; a self-service online planning module that allows students to plan their schedule and register for classes; and expanded wireless infrastructure on campus. HCC also boasts technology that supports student services and career assessment. In addition to computer labs, faculty use mobile devices and tablets in the classroom.

“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication routinely displayed by our campus technology professionals who strive to deliver comprehensive technology services to advance instruction, college services, and business processes for students, faculty, and staff,” said Tom Glaser, vice president of information technology. “This recognition also provides an opportunity to learn about services and outcomes at other institutions, which provides direction for technological improvements and advances in the future.”
