Howard Community College Named “2014 Great College to Work For”
The Chronicle of Higher Education announced this morning that Howard Community College (HCC) has been selected as a “2014 Great College to Work For.” The award marks the sixth consecutive year that the national higher education publication has selected HCC for this honor. Only three other community colleges outside the state of Maryland have attained this record achievement.
The national “Great Colleges to Work For” recognition program is based on the results of a survey completed by more than 43,000 employees—including a sample of HCC faculty and staff—at 278 colleges and universities across the country. HCC won the Honor Roll distinction for receiving honors in the following nine categories, when compared to other large community colleges:
- Collaborative Governance
- Compensation and Benefits
- Confidence in Senior Leadership
- Facilities, Workspace and Security
- Professional/Career-Development Programs
- Respect and Appreciation
- Supervisor/Department Chair Relationship
- Work/Life Balance
“Howard Community College is honored to have been selected by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a ‘Great College’ for a record sixth time,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of Howard Community College. “This award is only possible because our faculty and staff members dedicate themselves every day to providing pathways to success in the lives of their students and colleagues.”
The Great College survey results are a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and staff. The primary factor in deciding whether a college received recognition was the employee feedback.
To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm. “Great Colleges to Work For” is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
