Howard Community College Launches Linux Systems Administrator Apprenticeships
Howard Community College has launched a new Linux apprenticeship training program that provides qualifying students the opportunity to get hands-on work experience at AT&T in its public sector organization. The application period for the fall cohort is open now through July 9 for this new program and three additional information technology (IT) apprenticeships offered at Howard Community College with AT&T: IT field support, network field support, and information system security.
“Howard Community College and AT&T are working together to meet increased demand for trained IT specialists,” said Minah Woo, associate vice president of continuing education and workforce development at Howard Community College. “Our Linux system administrator apprentices can graduate from the program with the necessary set of technology skills and experience to participate in this fast-growing industry.”
Howard Community College’s new Linux apprenticeship offers IT college coursework, on-the-job learning, employer-paid education and a progressive wage. Apprentices can begin working part-time at AT&T supporting its federal customers’ unclassified assignments and projects while taking courses at the College on a part-time basis. As they progress, apprentices will be guided through the extensive process to obtain security clearance with AT&T as their sponsor. Once secure clearance is granted, an apprentice can transition to full-time work at AT&T while fulfilling curriculum requirements at the college.
As part of Howard Community College’s program, AT&T pairs apprentices with high-level managers. These managers mentor the apprentices and help them learn more about AT&T, the telecommunications industry, and the federal Defense and National Security markets. The goal is to help them explore pathways for career opportunities.
“The talent we are able to identify through these apprenticeship programs help us meet growing demand for our services,” said Brenda Anderson, a project manager at AT&T. “The apprentices we have hired from Howard Community College bring significant potential, enthusiasm, and the skill sets necessary to expand our ability to help federal customers deliver their missions.”
The Linux systems administrator apprenticeship is the 11th apprenticeship occupation offered since the inception of apprenticeships at Howard Community College in September 2018, and the fourth IT apprenticeship offered with AT&T. In addition to IT, other Howard Community College apprenticeships include biomedical engineering technology; construction management; electrical; heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration; and software development.
