Howard Community College Hires New Head Women’s Volleyball Coach
Howard Community College (HCC) Athletic Director Diane Schumacher announces the appointment of Gary Troy as the new head women’s volleyball coach.
"With Gary Troy joining our athletics program, he will build upon our era of success to keep our volleyball program contending for the Maryland Junior College Conference (MDJUCO) and Region XX Championships for Howard Community College,” said Schumacher.
Troy takes over a HCC Dragons’ program that finished 16-13 last year, including an impressive 8-4 record within the MDJUCO. Four solid sophomores are returning for the upcoming fall season, and Troy expects this talent will help the team finish over .500, win the MDJUCO, and play in the Region XX Tournament.
Prior to joining HCC, Troy served as head women’s volleyball coach of the 17–18 year-old Carroll County Vipers Volleyball Club in Westminster. Troy also served as assistant coach of the club’s Elite squad and as an assistant coach of the 15 year-old Under Armour Elite Volleyball Club in Towson.
Troy first became interested in coaching volleyball after watching his son, Matt, coach club teams. With the HCC position, Troy will be able to grow the legacy left by his son, who served as the HCC women’s volleyball coach six years ago.
This is Troy’s first college-level coaching position, and he is excited about the new opportunity. “I look at this chance as a great challenge,” said Troy. “My coaching philosophy is to help improve individuals academically, athletically, and to focus on team goals.”
