Get Ready for Back-to-School with Extra Scholarship Money

The cost of tuition shouldn’t stand in your way of a college education. Howard Community College now offers a brand-new, need-based scholarship to help Howard County families afford college courses. The Pathway Scholarship, which is made possible by the generosity of Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and the Howard County Councilmembers, serves a wide range of students, from dually enrolled high school students and recent graduates to adults seeking a better career and veterans.

What do you need to do to be considered for a Pathway Scholarship? It takes just two steps:

1. Apply to or currently attend Howard Community College.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), unless you are a dually enrolled high school student. Dually enrolled high school students who need financial support should speak to their high school guidance counselor or HCC admissions counselor.

Who is eligible for the Pathway Scholarship program? 

The Pathway Scholarships will be distributed to Howard County residents enrolled at Howard Community College who demonstrate financial aid need as determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Student recipients will vary, but anticipated recipients will likely include recent high school graduates (within six years), dually enrolled high school students, adult learners, veterans, and those students close to completing their degrees.

I don’t know if I will qualify for the scholarship. Should I still apply? 

Yes. First apply to Howard Community College, and then start the FAFSA process. By filling out the FAFSA, Howard Community College will receive a copy of your electronic application results from the Department of Education. Once the college receives your results, the review process will begin, and you will be notified within 2–3 weeks upon completion of your financial aid file.

How do I apply to Howard Community College? 

The steps for applying to Howard Community College can be found on the Admissions and Enrollment web page. After you apply, you will want to take your placement tests. Next, meet with an advisor, choose your classes, and register. 

How do I fill out the FAFSA? 

Complete the FAFSA online on the FAFSA website. Be sure to include Howard Community College’s school code (008175) in the school code section of the FAFSA. For ease and accuracy, we encourage you to use the Internal Revenue Service Data Retrieval Tool.
