Howard Community College to Offer Multiple Ways to Learn This Fall
Columbia, MD – Howard Community College will offer a blended learning environment for the fall semester, with some instruction in person for classes that benefit from hands-on experiences or labs. There will be three different class formats – hybrid, scheduled remote, and flexible online – to help students find the classes that best fit their learning styles, educational goals, and schedules. Select services will be available by appointment to allow for in-person assistance with academic advising, financial aid, and other important enrollment services.
“From the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, Howard Community College has prioritized the health, safety, and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. The decision for fall aligns with the college’s own recovery and reopening plan and follows guidance from Howard County, the State of Maryland, and the Centers for Disease and Prevention,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president. “I greatly appreciate the patience and perseverance of the college community as we developed our plan for the future, which balances health and safety with the necessity of some in-person services and instruction.”
Of the three class formats available for fall, hybrid classes provide students with instruction both on campus and online. Main campus is listed as the location for hybrid classes in the revised class schedule now available at howardcc.edu. Scheduled remote classes will meet virtually at designated times in an online classroom. Zoom is listed as the location for these classes, since classes will be taught via Zoom videoconferencing. Flexible online classes allow students to learn on their own time. These classes may or may not use Zoom, and recorded lectures will be posted for students to watch at times that work best for them. Online is listed as the location for these classes.

College Recovery and Reopening Plan
Over the next few months, all faculty, staff, and students will be expected to maintain a safe and healthy environment when on campus by wearing face coverings (masks), social distancing with a minimum of six feet separation, and practicing good hygiene. The college currently requires all employees coming to campus to complete an online health screening form to ensure they do not have any symptoms of COVID-19. This form will be provided to students to complete when they begin returning to campus.
Based on the college’s recovery and reopening plan, full campus operations will resume once the state and county move to phase three of their plans. No matter when this might occur, fall classes will continue in the format currently designated – hybrid, scheduled remote, and flexible online – in an effort to minimize disruption and ensure continuity in learning.
