HCC Receives National Award of Excellence
The American Association of Community Colleges recently honored Howard Community College with its Outstanding CEO/Board Relationship Award of Excellence, a national honor for which only one community college is selected each year. Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of Howard Community College, and Kevin Doyle, chair of the college’s board of trustees, accepted the award at the American Association of Community College’s annual convention in Orlando, Florida.
Dr. Hetherington and the members of the college’s board have worked together to serve students and strengthen their commitment to the community. Ongoing self-assessment and evaluation have been key to the board’s priority of continuous quality improvement. Along with monthly board development sessions, the board members attend an annual retreat and hold new trustee orientation to promote leadership values among the trustees.
National, statewide, and local advocacy efforts for the promotion of community colleges have been a priority for both the president and the board, with the chair and president serving on the board of directors for the Maryland Association of Community Colleges.
The current members of the board are Kevin Doyle, chair; Felícita Solá-Carter, vice chair; Steven Joss; Christopher Marasco; Kevin Schmidt and Frank Turner.
