Howard Community College Launches Maryland’s First Construction Management Apprenticeship Program

Columbia, MD – To meet the growing demand for employees in the construction management industry, Howard Community College (HCC) will offer Maryland’s first Construction Management Apprenticeship Program. The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation recently approved HCC as a registered apprenticeship sponsor for the new program, which will launch this summer.

The two-year program, which prepares students for architectural, engineering, and general contracting careers, leverages feedback received from industry partners and utilizes the college’s existing certificate program. Supported by grant funding from the Maryland State Department of Education, the program includes construction management courses, a series of noncredit work readiness courses, and 2,000 on-the-job training hours per year.

“Howard Community College is pleased to offer such an innovative and much-needed program to educate the workforce of the future,” said Dr. Kate Hetherington, president of HCC. “This apprenticeship program will provide pathways to success, and it will play a key role in strengthening Maryland’s economy through training professionals for an increasing job market.”

Students will secure employment with local, licensed construction companies. HCC staff will assist in connecting students with potential employers who, in turn, will pay students to “earn while they learn.” Often, educational costs are offset by these employer sponsors, which allows students to graduate without tuition-related expenses.

“As a Howard County business, we are excited about the apprenticeship program at HCC. The industry needs qualified, motivated employees, and this program will help train candidates for construction management,” said Gary Garofalo, president and CEO of Harkins Builders. “I think people will be surprised to learn that construction management is a great, well-paying career option for young talent in Howard County.”

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, students will earn 34 credits, nearly 4,000 hours’ worth of wages, a Construction Management Certificate from HCC, and will be eligible to take the Construction Manager-in-Training (CMIT) certification exam. The CMIT credential by the Construction Management Association of America is a sought-after certification for construction management professionals.

Students will also be well-positioned to enter the workforce, continue on at HCC for an associate degree, and then transfer to a four-year university.

HCC’s apprenticeship program will kick off with a two-week boot camp, starting June 3, to prepare apprentices for entry into the program.

Licensed construction firms interested in sponsoring an apprentice can contact HCC for additional information.

Applications for students interested in enrolling in the program are due May 1, 2019, for best consideration. Students must have employment with a qualifying construction company prior to starting the program.

Construction Management is the second apprenticeship program at HCC. The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) Apprenticeship started in fall 2018.
