Howard Community College Celebrates Newly Renovated Playground with Community Partners and Donors

Columbia, MD – Howard Community College (HCC) recently welcomed community partners and donors to the college’s Children’s Learning Center (CLC) to a dedication and tour of the newly renovated play area funded by a PNC Foundation Grant of $11,000.

“Our support of Howard Community College Children’s Learning Center playground for preschoolers is a strategic investment in the future of our community,” said Laura Rutherford, PNC client and community relations specialist. “By preparing our youngest citizens for educational success, we help build a solid foundation for the future of this region.”

With the funding from The PNC Foundation and others, the CLC was able to design and renovate the outdoor play space for infants, toddlers, and preschool students. The new spaces are designed to engage all the senses and promote curricular goals in science, mathematics, and the arts. Students in HCC’s engineering and early childhood education programs were also involved in designing the space and developing outdoor classroom lesson plans.

One of the highlights of the renovated space is the musical playground, which was installed earlier this year.

The PNC Foundation made the grant as part of the PNC Grow Up Great, its early childhood initiative. Additional support for the project was provided by Harkins Builders, Columbia Association, Horizon Foundation, Design Collective, Rotary Club of Columbia, and Rotary International District 7620 Grant – many of which had representatives in attendance for the CLC Celebration. Total funds raised for the renovation were $22,500.
