HCC Launches New Online Orientation for New Students

Miss an in-person orientation session or just want to revisit some helpful information about on-campus resources?
On October 1, 2018, the Office of Student Life launched a brand new online orientation for new students. This refreshed online orientation offers videos, presentations, and other information that helps students learn how to be successful academically and hear about the resources that will inspire their success at Howard Community College (HCC).
The orientation is a supplement to the in-person orientation sessions and is aimed at students who missed their HCC orientation or would like to learn more about campus resources and information.
Orientation is critical to new student success and retention, said Candace Depass, assistant director of co-curricular programs. Of the new students who attend orientation, over 80 percent return the following spring compared to 60 percent of those who do not attend orientation. Unfortunately, not all students are able to attend new student orientation in person.
“The online orientation makes this essential information more accessible to students, providing with the knowledge of campus resources that will mitigate challenges they might encounter in their transition to life at HCC,” Depass said. “As of last year, roughly 70 percent of first-time students attended some form of orientation already offered by the college. We hope that number will grow even higher with the online orientation as a resource.”
