Howard Community College Dance Faculty Perform September 23 and 24

Columbia, MD – Continuing the tradition of bringing compelling and powerful dance to the greater Baltimore region, the Howard Community College (HCC) dance program will present its annual faculty concert with two performances, September 23 and 24, at the college's Smith Theatre. This captivating and diverse concert will feature the work of HCC dance faculty and guest Christopher K. Morgan & Artists dance company, plus the talents of HCC dance students, alumni, and local guest artists.

Faculty Elizabeth Higgins and Joan Nicholas-Walker will premiere two choreographed dances at the concert. In “Home is Where…?,” Higgins explores how three dancers answer the question from their own unique perspectives. With an original score composed by Wall Matthews, the dancers synthesize various textures, objects, and movement to embody personal interpretation and intention in response to the question. Nicholas-Walker’s “I Do” examines the concept of commitment in a theatrical dance solo set to popular love songs. Additional dances include Nicole McClam’s “Into the Out” and Sylvana Christopher’s “Simmer.”

Baltimore-area professional dance company Christopher K. Morgan & Artists joins HCC dance faculty to present three works, which stem from a belief in the urgency of live performance in an increasingly isolating, commercial, and digital world. His choreography has been called “charming and poignant” by Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times and has been presented in 18 countries on five continents at such venues as The Kennedy Center, The Maly Theatre (Russia), the Hong Kong Cultural Center, and even the South Lawn of the White House.

Performances are September 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. in HCC’s Smith Theatre, located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland. There will be a post-show discussion led by the choreographers on Friday, September 23, following the performance. The discussion is free of charge and open to the public, even if you are attending the production on a different date.

Tickets are $10 for general admission; $5 for students, seniors, faculty, staff and military. To purchase tickets, visit howardcc.edu/boxoffice or call 443-518-1500. Box office hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12–6 p.m. and 90 minutes prior to each showtime.
