The international education program at Howard Community College (HCC) is growing, providing greater opportunities for students who wish to study abroad.

This growth has led to the college’s first-ever Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship winners and the greatest number of Critical Language Scholarship winners.

In order to fulfill his Gilman International Scholarship requirements, student Duk Yong Shin will travel on his own to Nanjing and then to Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing where he will join the Howard Community College China-Culture Study Abroad program. While in China, he will take courses at the Sichuan University and will also stay at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to his courses at Howard Community College, Shin is enrolled at the University of Maryland, where he plans to complete his management degree.

Another Gilman International Scholarship recipient, student Kareem Mack, will travel to Urbania, Italy with the Centro Studi Italiani School of Language. An aspiring opera singer, Mack will study music theory, Italian diction and music history while receiving voice lessons and performing recitals through the Si Parla, Si Canta program. Mack is currently majoring in music at HCC.

Students Veronica Chinn, Tatsiana Horbach, Samantha Levine, and Vanesa Martinez-Chacon are recipients of Critical Language Scholarships, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. A military veteran, Chinn, who is studying Chinese at Howard Community College, will travel to Changchun, China, through the funded summer language and cultural immersion program. Horbach, who is studying Chinese, will travel to Xi’an. Levine, who is currently taking a Japanese course, will study in Dalian, China, and Martinez-Chacon, who is taking the Cultures of China course, will travel to Suzhou, China.
