On behalf of the Howard Community College (HCC) 50th Anniversary History Committee, we are pleased to present this collection of photos from the college archives. This collection presents photographs and documents depicting daily life on the HCC campus during the first two decades. From its earliest years, HCC has been more than just a place of scholarship, but has served as a locality for events, personal and community growth, and diversity.
We hope that you enjoy this look back at some familiar faces, now-gone locations, fun events, as well as a look into the inner workings of what made our campus tick in the 1970’s and 1980’s. While not all photos have attributions, we must acknowledge the early work of Quent Kardos, who was the college photographer through this time period. His lens did not just capture the events at hand, but also the character of the places and people in these images.

February 8th - March 15th, 2021Howard Community College Visual Arts Department is proud to feature Linnea Poole and Clark Decapite February 8th - March 14th as a part of the Virtual Exhibition Series. Decapite will give a recorded artist lecture that will accompany the exhibitions. The lecture will be available for viewing on March 16, 2021.
Through the use of replicated forms taken from dated, often times antiquated objects; I attempt to represent the relationship between the existing and the existed. Much like snapshots taken out of the context of time, each object represents a moment within its previous reality. It is through the representational compiling of moments in time that a new structure is formed, dictated by each individual unit placement in the whole. In choosing to use glass within my work, I attempt to relate the individual objects to an ethereal realm with the aid of the material’s transparent yet structural qualities. Maintaining an earthly presence, the object is grounded under its material weight and through its delicate nature, discussing a tactile existence in which fragility undermines all existing structures present. Through the introduction of flaws often times contrasted by mechanical enrichment, a balance between purity and discord exist.

Linnea Poole is an Art Practitioner; Womanist; and Community Educator. She has taught theater performance, visual arts, and dance movement in various schools around the DC, Maryland, and VA corridor. Currently, Linnea is an Adjunct Professor at Coppin State University and at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Linnea also teaches at a local middle school in West Baltimore where her students study how to create art activism and stand as ambassadors for their community. She was recently featured on Baltimore's news station WJZ and was highlighted on her fiber art practice and community focused workshops. Linnea holds a Bachelor of Science in Urban Arts from Coppin State University and a Master of Fine Art in Community Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

What’s Going On? American Politics 1970–2020 Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm Locations: Online Details:
Talk by Dr. Michael Heffren, professor of social sciences
In 1970, the year that Howard Community College opened, the country was deeply divided with political protest, social unrest, conflicts over racism, and urban riots. Marvin Gaye wrote the song “What’s Going On” that year to ask the question, “Why?” We could ask that same question today. Is this a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same? In fact, it’s quite different. In this talk, trace the changes in American politics over the past 50 years and try to answer the question: “What’s Going On”?
Free and open to the public, this series is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Columbia Patuxent. Participants are asked to RSVP at howardcc.edu/lectureseries or by emailing foundation@howardcc.edu. Information about accessing the virtual lectures will be provided closer to the event date.
About the Speaker: Dr. Michael Heffren received his B.A. from King’s College (Pennsylvania), and his M.A. and Ph.D from Rutgers University. His dissertation was entitled “The Decline of Liberalism in the United States: A Class Relations Perspective.” His area of specialization was political sociology. Dr. Heffren has been teaching full time at HCC since fall 2000 and currently serves as the coordinator for political science courses.

JumpStart is a partnership between HCC and Howard County Public Schools (HCPSS), designed for HCPSS students who would like to dually enroll in college courses at HCC. This information session is designed to introduce prospective students and their families to HCC's flexible and structured dual enrollment programs.

The Queen is a 2006 drama starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II depicting the monarch’s reaction to the death of Princess Diana. Helen Mirren's performance received a five-minute standing ovation at the premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The jewelry she wore in the film was based on actual jewels owned by Elizabeth II, including her trademark two or three strands of pearls, Queen Victoria's bow brooch (at Diana's funeral), and Queen Mary's button earrings (the large pearl earrings each topped by a tiny diamond). With the pandemic closing so many in-person options, we are holding our traditional film festivals virtually, taking advantage of as many popular streaming formats as possible, and encouraging film fans to join us for Friday Film discussions. It is like a book club, but with films -- you choose the films you are interested in from the list, you watch them on your own before the scheduled discussion, and you join the discussions on Friday evenings via Zoom. Discussions will be moderated by film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano, as well as partners in the Howard County Library system and the Howard Community College library.

Through the use of replicated forms taken from dated, often times antiquated objects; I attempt to represent the relationship between the existing and the existed. Much like snapshots taken out of the context of time, each object represents a moment within its previous reality. It is through the representational compiling of moments in time that a new structure is formed, dictated by each individual unit placement in the whole. In choosing to use glass within my work, I attempt to relate the individual objects to an ethereal realm with the aid of the material’s transparent yet structural qualities. Maintaining an earthly presence, the object is grounded under its material weight and through its delicate nature, discussing a tactile existence in which fragility undermines all existing structures present. Through the introduction of flaws often times contrasted by mechanical enrichment, a balance between purity and discord exist.

HCC at 50: A Blast from the Past - Daily Life from the First Two Decades
On behalf of the Howard Community College (HCC) 50th Anniversary History Committee, we are pleased to present this collection of photos from the college archives. This collection presents photographs and documents depicting daily life on the HCC campus during the first two decades. From its earliest years, HCC has been more than just a place of scholarship, but has served as a locality for events, personal and community growth, and diversity.
We hope that you enjoy this look back at some familiar faces, now-gone locations, fun events, as well as a look into the inner workings of what made our campus tick in the 1970’s and 1980’s. While not all photos have attributions, we must acknowledge the early work of Quent Kardos, who was the college photographer through this time period. His lens did not just capture the events at hand, but also the character of the places and people in these images.

February 8th - March 15th, 2021Howard Community College Visual Arts Department is proud to feature Linnea Poole February 8th - March 14th as a part of the Virtual Exhibition Series. Poole will give a recorded artist lecture that will accompany the exhibitions. The lecture will be available for viewing on February 28, 2021
Linnea Poole is an Art Practitioner; Womanist; and Community Educator. She has taught theater performance, visual arts, and dance movement in various schools around the DC, Maryland, and VA corridor. Currently, Linnea is an Adjunct Professor at Coppin State University and at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Linnea also teaches at a local middle school in West Baltimore where her students study how to create art activism and stand as ambassadors for their community. She was recently featured on Baltimore's news station WJZ and was highlighted on her fiber art practice and community focused workshops. Linnea holds a Bachelor of Science in Urban Arts from Coppin State University and a Master of Fine Art in Community Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
