Contemporary Korean Art, Literature and film (Diversity Index # 0912)

The presentation will provide an overview of content discussed at the Infusing Institute on Korean Studies in Hawaii in July 2019. The presentation will focus on the Minjung arts movement of the 1980's and its relationship to the democratization of Korean politics, contemporary Korean film with clips from and analysis of Bong Joon-ho's The Host (2007) and Lee Chang-dong's Burning (2018), and contemporary Korean literature, with close readings of the historical novel Human Acts by Han Kang and the science fiction short story "The Bloody Battle of Broccoli Plain" by Djuna.
