Modern African & Middle Eastern Literature Colloquium
The Modern Middle Eastern & African Literature Colloquium provides analytical, intellectual, and open-ended discussions aiming to promote exchange of knowledge, sharing of ideas, and to spread awareness of Africa and the Middle East. HCC faculty and staff are invited to join our enjoyable, collaborative reading and presentation sessions. Every semester, we select rich, authentic, genuine, thrilling, and suspenseful novel(s) that reflect the current events in Africa and the Middle East. The theme for this semester is: “European Imperialism and African social and religious dynamics”. During this semester, we will read: Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah (256 pages). Shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Award, Paradise was characterized by the Nobel Prize committee as “breakthrough” work. The book is beautifully written in a deeply evocative, mythical style. it is the story of an African boy and his tragic love story, and a tale of the corruption of African tradition by European colonialism.
