I’M A GOOD PERSON! ISN’T THAT ENOUGH? Walking the Talk of Racial Diversity and Inclusion (Diversity Index # 1399)
Join us as we welcome Lisa Gray, Associate Director of Student Diversity and Inclusion within Campus Life at UMBC and Debby Irving, racial justice educator and acclaimed author of Waking Up White to HCC.
The afternoon kicks off with a roundtable discussion moderated by Lisa about power and privilege with Howard Community College students and a group of Howard County residents dedicated to helping our county work on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion for all.
Then, Debby will lead an interactive workshop that supports white people and (white-identified people of color) in making the paradigm shift from ‘fixing’ and ‘helping’ those believed to be inferior to focusing on internalized white superiority and its role in perpetuating racism at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels in Howard County and beyond. Using historical and media images, Debby will examine how she used her white-skewed belief system to interpret the world around her. This experience includes pauses for reflection, dialogue, and Q&A.
While prior registration is not required, the primary audience for this Choose Civility event are the students, faculty and staff of Howard Community College.
Presented in partnership with Howard Community College, Howard County Inclusion Collaborative, Howard County Library System, and the Horizon Foundation.
