Technology Resources for Students

Technology Help Desk.  One stop for all your technology needs, HCC's Help Desk provides service and support to faculty, staff and students in many areas, including logging on to lab computers, student and staff email, online classes, help with printing problems, software assistance, and myHCC.  If we cannot resolve a problem quickly over the telephone, in person, or via email, we will assign it to the appropriate Information Technology technician or team.

Password Services.  Students are empowered to manage their own passwords by using password services.  Once you know your HCC Login ID, you can set up a new account by answering a couple identity questions, and a few security questions.  You can re-set forgotten passwords and renew expired accounts using this online service.  Student login accounts expire every six months. 

Wireless Internet Access.  Students can access the Internet with their personal wireless devices from many locations on campus.  The coziest "hotspots" include the Cafe on the Quad, the DH Lounge, and the Quad lawn.  To connect to the wireless network, simply boot up your wireless device, open your browser, and login to the HCCOPEN network using your HCC Login ID and password. 

myHCC.  Through myHCC, students can access registration services, student email, and Canvas.  Here students will also find calendars of events, forms, and announcements such as the President's Weekly Update.  HCC Express services conveniently provides secure access to: 

  • online registration and bill payment,
  • availability of credit and noncredit classes,
  • your personal class schedule,
  • your course grades and history of classes taken, and
  • financial aid and scholarship status. 

HCC Student Email.  Your HCC student email account is automatically created if you are a current registered credit student or ESL student.  It is the only email address used by the college for official communications.    It is an excellent resource for students to communicate with faculty and other students, and to receive announcements of college events and activities.  

Canvas.  Canvas is the online course delivery system used by HCC.  Supplemental materials for many on campus courses are also made available through Canvas.  Faculty post announcements, assignments,  test and quizzes for students.  Students can also communicate with instructors and peers through Canvas messaging and discussion boards.

Student Computer Support (SCS) staff provides Canvas and Google Apps training and support for HCC students at locations around Campus, in classrooms, remotely and online.  Technology workshops and “Ask an Expert” sessions are held at various hours and locations. Check the college calendar and the “help” button in Canvas for scheduled times and locations. One-on-one training, remote support sessions, and custom Technology Workshops for groups (entire classes or student groups) can also be arranged.  Online training for Canvas is available through Canvas guides and videos at:

Google Apps for Education is a special set up of the popular Google Apps, tailored specifically for educational institutions. Accounts are managed by HCC and all advertisements are turned off. With unlimited storage space for each student, Google Apps allows students to create and store documents, and collaborate and share ideas online between each other.  HCC Students can access their personal Google apps account at; log in using your HCC Login ID and password.  For training and tech support provided by Student Computer Support (SCS) staff on Google Apps, please contact the HCC help desk at 443-518-4444.  

Student Computer Study Labs.  Come see HCC’s quiet and comfortable computer study labs in DH-110 and CL-129.  Simply walk in and log on to a computer using your HCC login ID and password.  Check your email, participate in your online class, do your Internet research, scan a document into MS Word, and print and assemble your assignments.  Lab and Help Desk staff are onsite if you have questions or problems.  To conserve paper, the black-ink printers are set by default to duplex (double-sided) printing.  We offer credit and ESL students free black ink printing (up to 250 pages per semester); 10 cents per page and 15 cents per duplex page thereafter.  Color printing is 75¢ per page.  The free printing allocation counts printing students do in the Learning Assistance Center (LAC) Lab, the Library and the Health Sciences open lab in HS266.

Laptop Loans.  Students may borrow a laptop at no charge for up to 24 hours at the help desk in the computer lab located in Room CL-129.  Stop by to discuss the terms and conditions of the laptop loan program.  Laptops are configured with Microsoft Office and wireless internet on campus. 

Internet Cafe.  Located inside the Cafe on the Quad, in the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Building, computers and personal work spaces allow students to enjoy a beverage or lunch while working on group projects or surfing the Internet, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.   Computers are configured with the Microsoft Office application suite, but printing is not available.

Assistive Technology.  Student Support Services provides technology tools for students who have a documented physical or learning disability.  Tools include screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition software, ergonomic keyboards, and alternative mouse pointing devices.

English/World Languages Lab.  The Composition and Literature Center (CLC), located in DH-210, is an open lab specifically for students in English, ESL, and world language classes.  The CLC's 25 computers are loaded with a wide variety of software.  Students may also walk into the lab for personal help with writing, grammar, and reading.

Math Lab.  Located in Room 230 of the Hickory Ridge Building, the Walk-in Math Lab is open to all students currently enrolled in an HCC mathematics class.  Computers are configured with software for every HCC math course (except ModuMath).  Free walk-in tutoring is available from faculty and student tutors.  ModuMath software is located in HR-326 and HR-330. 

HCC Library.  Located in the Clark Library Building, 2nd floor, the HCC library provides computers for Internet access, books, periodicals, and instructional electronic resources to help with research and class assignments.  Online resources available from the library web page include databases with full-text articles and books, electronic reserves of class materials, and streaming videos for course assignments. 

eLearning.   HCC's eLearning Program offers many opportunities for students to have flexibility in learning, including online courses via TeleWeb, Canvas, and Interactive TV.  

Office Technology Program.  This program features open-entry business software courses designed to give you flexibility in starting and completing a course.  Students may complete a course from home, at another location outside of the college, or in HCC’s Office Technology Classroom, which is staffed with Microsoft-certified instructors. 

Emergency Services and Security Telephones are installed in hallways, the parking garage, and parking lots throughout the campus.  Take the time to locate these phones as you walk from your car to class.  Emergency Services phones give you options to connect to Security, Plant Operations, and the Technology Help Desk.  Security phones ring directly to the security staff.  If you have car trouble, become injured or ill, see suspicious activity, or would like an escort to your car, please feel free to use these phones to contact Security.
