January 10-15, 2010 Students: Renee Arnold, Sarah Blake, Eliza Cardenas, Cameron Coates, Parastoo Dane, Andrew Kostas, Victoria Novoselova, Derrik Pendleton, Kristen Tippett and John Toner Advisors: Rick Leith and Stacy Korbelak The Center for Service Learning's latest Alternative Winter Break trip sent 10 HCC students to New York, New York. There the students and their two advisors spent five full days serving the homeless population of New York in different ways and at different locations all over the city.
Working with the Youth Service Opportunities Project and HELP USA, the group volunteered at a different soup kitchen, food pantry or homeless shelter throughout the city each day of the week. Collectively, they served over 3,000 meals and gave numerous bags food to people in need. In addition, they also enjoyed meeting and practicing with the New York City Street Soccer team, one of sixteen U.S. teams that use soccer to empower homeless individuals to achieve their goals in life.
Overall, the 2009 winter break trip was an experience unlike any other. Sincere thanks to the students, advisors and the awesome coordinators of the trip, Carol Parreco and Brittany Budden. |
