Textbooks

the hcc bookstore

You have two options for buying your books through the Howard Community College Bookstore: online or in person. Both offer the same great prices, convenience, and service that you expect as a HCC student.

Looking for information about textbook affordability? Visit our textbook affordability page.

While we do our best, we know that textbook titles may change, based on new information from faculty or publishers. Textbooks can change from semester to semester, so we recommend you check with our staff before purchasing your textbooks for future semesters.

Buying Online

Our online bookstore service offers you:

  • the assurance that you will receive the correct textbooks specified by your faculty,
  • peace of mind, knowing that your textbooks will be available and will arrive on time,
  • access to the latest textbook requirements so you can plan your budget, and
  • student-friendly return policies with instant credit

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and financial aid awards.

Buying in Person

Book lists for each semester are provided for use in the HCC Bookstore. Students should bring their registration forms to match the course and section numbers to the booklist. Textbooks are listed on the booklist, and are shelved, alphabetically by course name.

Course cards are placed under each textbook title. Textbooks listed on white course cards are required. Textbooks listed on pink course cards are optional, and should not be purchased until the first class has been attended.

To help make a distinction between course materials used at our main Columbia campus, the Laurel College Center, and the Mount Airy College Center for Health Care Education, Laurel course cards are hightlighted in yellow while Mount Airy College Center course cards are highlighted in green both on the shelf as well as the booklist.

Used books, if any are available, are placed next to new textbooks of the same title and are identified by a yellow Used Book sticker on the spine.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and financial aid awards.

  • Special Orders

The HCC Bookstore will accept special orders from HCC students and staff for any books currently in print. A deposit of 50 percent of the estimated cost of the book is required at the time of ordering.

  • Buying with Financial Aid

Students using financial aid as means of payment must have a current term student ID card at time of purchase. We recommend you visit this financial aid page for a worksheet and additional information on how you can successfully use excess financial aid funds at the HCC Bookstore.

  • Book Buy Back

As a service to students, the Bookstore sells used textbooks, allowing you to sell your books back and for your fellow students to benefit from older, reduced cost books.

Used books are purchased twice a year, at the end of the fall and spring semesters, during exams week. The prices offered are based on resale demand, whether at Howard Community College or the national wholesale market. The maximum possible return on a used book is 50% of the current new book price.
