CORE Program for Adults With Developmental Disabilities

CORE Program for Adults With Developmental Disabilities

Discover HCC's unique adult program serving students with special needs.

Adults with different abilities attending College Opportunities for Readiness Education (CORE) will be taught math and reading skills in an educational environment that seeks to improve or maintain each student’s academic level. Students will experience opportunities for learning that reflect their interests and individual needs both in the classroom as well as in a computer lab.

CORE is a five day per week program that meets Monday through Friday from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. on HCC's campus. Cost: $375 per month (includes $275 in fees*).

  • CORE Program Objectives

Some of the objectives of the CORE program are to:

    • Practice, enhance or maintain math, language and reading skills.
    • Collect research on various topics including vocational options.
    • Discuss and review workplace expectations.
    • Express appropriate advocacy techniques.
    • Develop effective communication skills.
  • CORE Program Activities

Students' participation in a broad range of activities provides opportunities for them to continually develop and use skills learned in a variety of college settings. Students participate in activities on all parts of the campus, including attending athletic events, visiting gallery exhibits, and listening to guest speakers.

    Activities include:

    • Mondays and Wednesdays: Focus on English language activities.
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays: Focus on math activities.
    • Fridays: Students enjoy a movie, use the game room, or choose another activity as a group. Weather permitting, students take a brief walk every day to promote a healthy lifestyle.
