The fundamental purpose of the America Reads Challenge is to:
enable parents and educators to complement and expand existing successful literacy efforts;
help children increase their skills and achievement levels;
give extended learning time to children who need additional help.
Research demonstrates that, in addition to increasing children’s sense of control over their reading ability, tutoring increases children’s reading achievement, confidence, and motivation. Tutors produce positive results! Howard Community College students have an opportunity to be a part of the America Reads Challenge by being reading or math tutors at local elementary schools or at a non-profit after school programs.
In order to participate, students must:
- meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the Federal Work-Study program (verify eligibility on HCC Express or see Financial Aid Services).
- be enrolled in a financial aid eligible program of study as noted on the HCC Application for Admissions.
- be actively enrolled in 6 or more credits each Fall and Spring semester.
- have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
- enjoy working with children.
