The symbol could be a person, an animal or an object. Schools and sports teams often have mascots. Mascots often symbolize something important in an organization's name, history, or location - for example, the Baltimore Ravens football team uses the raven as its mascot. The raven is a kind of bird. It represents one of Baltimore's most famous writers, Edgar Allen Poe, who lived in Baltimore. One of Mr. Poe's most important poems is "The Raven". Sometimes mascots are picked just because people like a certain symbol. Eagles, hawks and lions and other powerful animals are often selected because they are symbols of strength. Mascots may also be chosen because they are funny and make people laugh. Mascots are fun. They help create spirit - for example, team spirit and school spirit. When people see other people with a sweatshirt, cap or t-shirt with that mascot they know they like the same school or team. Mascots help people feel like they are part of a group. They can make people laugh. They can make people feel proud. HCC's mascot is a dragon. Why did HCC choose a dragon for it's new mascot? Howard Community College chose a dragon for it's mascot because dragons are symbols of power, strength and victory, The dragon's chest was the perfect place to put the college's shield, which was designed from the Howard and Calvert family crests and symbolizes our county's heritage. The dragon and the shield together also stand for Howard Community college's commitment to serving the people of Howard County with strength and power. HCC's sports teams are known as The DRAGONS!!
