What is a mascot?
A mascot is a symbol groups or organizations use for good luck. The symbol could be a person, an animal or an object. Schools and sports teams often have mascots.
What do mascots symbolize?
Mascots often symbolize something important in an organization's name, history, or location - for example, the Baltimore Ravens football team uses the raven as its mascot. The raven is a kind of bird. It represents one of Baltimore's most famous writers, Edgar Allen Poe, who lived in Baltimore. One of Mr. Poe's most important poems is "The Raven".
Sometimes mascots are picked just because people like a certain symbol. Eagles, hawks and lions and other powerful animals are often selected because they are symbols of strength. Mascots may also be chosen because they are funny and make people laugh.
Why are mascots important?
Mascots are fun. They help create spirit - for example, team spirit and school spirit. When people see other people with a sweatshirt, cap or t-shirt with that mascot they know they like the same school or team. Mascots help people feel like they are part of a group. They can make people laugh. They can make people feel proud.
