Advanced Standing Nursing

Please note that admissions policies and procedures may change.  These changes may affect those applying for the nursing programs in future semesters.

Prospective students may apply for "advanced standing" into Howard Community College's Nursing Program by applying to enter:

  • At the NURS-133/134 level (Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse)
  • At the NURS-230/233/234 level (Registered Nurse only)

Students who are already licensed as LPNs in the state of Maryland or a compact state should obtain information on the LPN Pathways Sequence program.

The following options are available for applying for Advanced Standing into the NURS-133/134 and NURS-230/233/234 levels:

Transfer Credit Option

Transfer credit may be granted for coursework equivalent to HCC's NURS-130, NURS-132, NURS-133, and NURS-134 courses when taken at another accredited institution. Clinical nursing coursework must have been completed with a grade of "C" or higher, and cannot be older than three years old by the time a student enters clinical nursing courses at Howard Community College.

Credit Through Proficiency Exams

Students may be able to receive credit for NURS-130, NURS 132, NURS-133, and/or NURS-134 by successfully completing proficiency exams. Students interested in obtaining information on taking the proficiency exams must talk to an allied health admissions counselor in the Office of Admissions and Advising (RCF-242).

Steps to Apply for Advanced Standing Nursing
  • Students interested in this program should make an appointment to see an allied health admissions counselor by calling the Office of Admissions and Advising at 410-772-4856. Appointments are generally scheduled for Thursdays on the hour between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Submit an HCC application for admission.
  • Take placement tests: All prospective nursing students must take the college's English placement test regardless of prior college-level course work or college entrance exam scores, unless students show proof of completion of a U.S. bachelor's degree at an accredited institution.
  • Complete the required prerequisite course work with appropriate minimum GPA.
  • Submit official college transcripts from all colleges attended: Fill out an official transcript evaluation form and submit it to the Office of Admissions and Advising (RCF-242).
