When may I begin to seek advising?

Advising is available to student athletes all year long.  One week is set aside each semester for student athletes to be advised and registered.

Why should I attend academic advising and register early?

These advising sessions provide you the opportunity to:

  • Receive individual and group advising tailored to your individual needs and concerns
  • Develop an academic plan which will help you achieve your academic goals
  • Create a schedule which you will allow you to meet your academic goals as well as meet your athletic commitments
  • Provide you the opportunity to register early so that you may secure a seat in the courses you need at the time you need the course before the course is closed

I am busy this semester and would prefer to wait until the end of the semester to register.  Is this OK?

  • You put yourself at great academic risk!  If you wait to register you may have problems registering for the courses required for your academic program since these courses may be filled to capacity.
  • You put yourself at great athletic risk!  If you wait to register you may be unable to schedule the courses you need around your practice schedule and games.

What should I do if it is impossible for me to attend my scheduled advising session?

You are strongly encouraged and welcomed to come to the Office of Admissions and Advising during our walk-in hours and meet with one of our advisors.  Just let them know that you are a student athlete.  If you are unable to come in during our walk in hours you may make an appointment with an advisor at a time convenient for both of you.

What is the process for advising and registration during student athlete advising weeks?

  • Sign in and complete an advising contact form.
  • Review your course and grade sheets, your academic program and program of study. If you do not agree with any of this information, please discuss this with your academic advisor.
  • Review the courses which are being offered during the terms you plan to register.
  • Work with your advisor to select courses from the course schedule which will meet the requirements of your academic program, as well as meet your time schedule.
  • Complete a registration form which both you and your advisor must sign.
  • Register online using myHCC.

Attention: If you do not register following your advising session then your opportunity for keeping your schedule may have been lost.

How many credits do I need to register for each semester as a student athlete?

May I stay eligible to play my sport if I do not complete a minimum of 12 credits during the semester?

If you do not meet the eligibility requirements of completing 12 academic credits per semester or 24 academic credits per year, you will not be eligible to participate in your sport.  If you plan to compete in your chosen sport in the upcoming semester and you have not completed 12 credits your previous semester, you must register for a course(s) during Winter session in order to compete in Spring term or during the summer sessions to compete in the fall term to meet the minimum credit requirements.
