Freshman Focus Program
Our nationally recognized Freshman Focus Program is for high school seniors who plan to enroll at HCC immediately following graduation. With Freshman Focus, you get help with the admissions process, and get advised and registered for courses before the general registration time. Best of all: you're first in line for course selection! The National Academic Advising Association named our Freshman Focus Program as one of its recent award winners.
- The application deadline for Freshman Focus has passed. 2017 high school graduates should complete the general HCC application here.
- For 2018 graduating high school seniors, the Freshman Focus application will be available in early Fall 2017.
Howard Community College uses the untimed ACCUPLACER test to provide you with information about your academic skills in math, English, and reading. The results of your assessment, along with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine your course selection. You cannot pass or fail the placement tests, but it is very important that you do your very best on these tests to have an accurate measure of your academic skills.
Testing dates will be assigned based on the preference indicated on your online application. Test dates are mailed with the acceptance letter.
In accordance with federal and state privacy laws, test scores will not be provided over the phone or to anyone other than yourself, unless you have provided written consent to do so.

The Freshman Focus "Focus Session" gives students in the program the tools they need to start developing a degree plan at HCC. At the session, students will hear from an Academic Advisor, have an opportunity to meet with Financial Aid and Counseling and Career Services, and receive their individual advising appointment.
Advising & Registration
Every Freshman Focus student can take advantage of individual advising and priority registration. During these appointments, students will work with an Academic Advisor to develop a degree plan and leave with their schedule of courses for the fall semester.
