Turkey-Culture Study Abroad

PROGRAM

Study abroad and enjoy a unique opportunity to earn college credit while traveling in the republic of Turkey. Howard Community College, Harrisburg Community College, and Northampton Community College are collaborating with Cankiri University in Turkey, to offer this study abroad program. During the two-week overseas program, you will be immersed in the social and cultural aspects of this fascinating country.

Enrollment is limited to 18 students, with 10 from Howard Community College.

Eligibility

• Must be 18 years old
• Full- or- Part-time student
• Applications must be completed and submitted to the Office of International Education, CL 113 no later than February 1, 2013.
• A $500 deposit is due with the application; deposit will be refunded if not selected.
• A valid passport is required. If applicant does not have a valid passport, be advised that a 4-6 week waiting period and $140 fee is required to obtain a passport. Applicants are strongly advised to apply for passport immediately.

Selection Criteria

Pre-acceptance interview with the International Education Office selection committee. Those selected will attend mandatory orientation meetings prior to departure.

SCHEDULE

Day 1- Depart for Istanbul.
Day 2- Arrive in Istanbul, Tour Hagia Sophia; Blue Mosque.
Day 3- Visit Archaeology Museum, Topkapi Palace, tour Cisterns.
Day 4- Sulaymaniye Mosque, Taksim Square
Day 5- Open Time, overnight train to Ankara.
Day 6- Tour Cankiri University and some lectures.
Day 7- Day trip to Ankara Atatürk’s Mousoleum, Ankara Castle, Copper Alley.
Day 8- Day trip to Kastamonu - Inebolu (Black Sea Coast)
Day 9- Cankiri - Tas Mescid/Salt Cave, Depart for Nevsehir.
Day 10- Cappadocia Tour, Avanos Göreme Open Air Museum.
Day 11- Cappadocia Tour, Uçhisar Castle, Pigeon Valley, Turkish Night Enterntainment.
Day 12- Depart for Antalya, Lunch in Konya/ Mevlana Museum, Arrive in Antalya.
Day 13- Tour Alanya, Side, Perge/Aspendos, Phaselis, Yanartas.
Day 14- Boat trip.
Day 15- Depart for the United States.

CREDITS

All HCC participants must register and pay for the Introduction to Sociology, SOCI-101. Do not register until accepted into the program.

DETAILS

The cost of the program is $3,000* ($500 Partial Scholarship available).

The $3,000* cost per person includes:

• Roundtrip airfare
• Transportation to and from airport in Turkey
• Accommodations in Istanbul & Cankiri Cappadocia and Antalya.
• Some meals
• Scheduled study-field excursions
• Use of Cankiri University student facilities

Additional Cost not included in the program fees:
• Visa (about $20)
• Some meals

* HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.

$1,250 Initial Payment due: January 18, 2013
$1,250 Final Payment due: February 15, 2013

Additional tuition fee required for SOCI-101, Introduction to Sociology (3 Credits), and SABR-910, Turkey Culture Study Abroad Program (1 credit)

Note: If you do not make payment on time you will automatically be dropped from the program will not be able to re-register.
