Program

Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and Don Quijote in Sevilla, Spain join hands in offering an exciting option for learning Spanish. Spend three weeks in Sevilla in the language school and earn academic credits or a certificate of proficiency. Included in the program cost are many planned excursions.

With this study abroad program you will fly to Madrid and will travel to Sevilla to work with a professional staff of Spanish instructors on language instruction, conversation skills, and Spanish culture. You will live with a family and you will meet students from around the world at the Don Quijote center. You will return in time to begin the spring semester.

Join us to Sevilla, Granada, and Cordoba during winter break. We will visit the grandiose Catedral de Santa María de la Sede de Sevilla where Christopher Columbus is buried, be dazzled by the Alcazar, the royal palace of the Moors, wander through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter and an afternoon tour of the bull ring will fire the imagination for the matador in his ‘suit of lights.’ At night we will experience the sounds of brightly clad Flamenco dancers and enjoy the tastes of the cuisine of southern Spain. A bus ride away, at the snow-covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada, is the city of Granada, a favorite haunt of Washington Irving. There we’ll visit the Alhambra and the breathtaking gardens of the Generalife. Visit the center of the city and the Great Mosque in Cordoba.

The program is open to students and community members on either a credit or non-credit basis. Note all participants, including those taking the program for non-credit are expected to participate in all activities of the program.

There is no language requirement.

Schedule
In Sevilla you will be placed in a small class of about five-ten students based upon your level of Spanish language proficiency. On Mondays through Fridays there will be twenty hours of language instruction, conversation practice and study of Spanish culture. In the evenings and on the weekends there will be excursions where you will have more opportunities to absorb the language and the culture of Spain.

Credits
HCC students who wish to receive college credits need to register for the appropriate Spanish course before going to Spain (see HCC Winter Credit Schedule of Classes). Students from other colleges and universities who want to receive credit for the course must get written permission from the appropriate department (Foreign Languages) of their school prior to program departure.

Details

The cost for the program (not including the cost for taking courses for credit) is $3,580. (limited financial aid is available for HCC credit students.)

The $3,580 cost includes:
        • Round trip airfare
       • Tuition at Don Quijote.
        • Ground transportation to and from the airport in Madrid and scheduled excursions.
        • Room and half board (double occupancy in host family).
        • Scheduled excursions
        • Bus transportation to and from Sevilla.

Additional costs not included in the program:
        • Personal expenses
        • Any excursions that students may undertake during open time.
        • Visa if required.

* HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.
