Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in Athlone, Ireland are pleased to offer a summer study abroad program specially designed for all HCC students that are part scholars and honors programs. Participants will study for one week at HCC. On the second week, students will travel to Ireland and stay a couple of days in Dublin before traveling and staying at the Athlone Institute of Technology. The course will cover the culture and history of Ireland from ancient times to the present and will involve numerous excursions to important historical sites.
This study abroad program will involve significant walking.
Day 1: Course at HCC

Day 5: Depart for Ireland.
Day 6: Arrive in Dublin and settle into accommodations. Visit Dubliniana and Christ Church.
Day 7: (Dublin) Take the Guinness Brewery Tour and visit Kilmainham Goal.
Day 8: (Dublin) Rebel Walking Tour of Dublin & the Jeanie Johnston Famine Museum.
Day 9: Depart for Athlone and visit Athlone Castle.
Day 10: Visit Limerick, Hunt Museum and King John’s Castle.
Day 11: Visit Knowth and Trim Castle.
Day 12: Visit the Rock of Cashel and Cashel Folk Museum.
Day 13: Visit Clonmacnoise and Birr Castle.
Day 14: Visit the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher.
Day 15: Depart for America.

HCC Students who wish to receive college credits need to register for the History 215 (3 credits) course.
"Celtic Ireland” - HIST-215 (3 Credits)
The student will be able to describe the history and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to modern times.
The student will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon and British influences. Prerequisite: ENGL-121.
The cost of the program is $3,100* (not including the cost of taking courses for credit)
(Limited Financial Aid is available for HCC credit students.)
The $3,100* cost includes:
• Round-trip airfare.
• Transportation to and from the airport in Ireland.
• Room and some meals.
• All planned excursions, including entrance fees and transportation.
Additional costs not included in the program:
• Any Visa if needed.
• Personal expenses.
* HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.
