Ireland Scholars/Honors Study Abroad

PROGRAM
 

Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in Athlone, Ireland are pleased to offer a summer study abroad program specially designed for all HCC students that are part scholars and honors programs. Participants will study for 4 days at HCC. On the 5th day, students will travel to Ireland and stay at the Athlone Institute of Technology. The course will cover the culture and history of Ireland from ancient times to the present and will involve numerous excursions to important historical sites.

This study abroad program will involve significant walking.

SCHEDULE

Day 1: Course at HCC
Day 2: Course at HCC
Day 3: Course at HCC
Day 4: Course at HCC
Day 5: Depart for Ireland.
Day 6: Arrive in Dublin. Depart for Athlone, settle into accomodations.
Day 7: Clonmacnoise and Athlone Castle.
Day 8: Visit Carrowmore Passage Tomb, Roscommon Castle and Queen Maeve's Tomb.
Day 9: Dublin: Kilmainham Gaol and National Museum.
Day 10: Limerick: Hunt Museum, Bishop's Palace and King John's Castle.
Day 11: Overnight to Cork, stop at the Rock of Cashel.
Day 12: Cork City, Blarney Castle.
Day 13: Open Day.
Day 14: Visit Pawerscourt.
Day 15: Galway: Cathedral of St. Nicholas and City Museum.
Day 16: Visit Knowth and Trim Castle.
Day 17: Dublin: Rebel Walking Tour and open afternoon.
Day 18: Visit the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher.
Day 19: Depart for America.
 Schedule is subject to change depending on prices and entrance availability.

CREDITS

“Celtic Ireland” - HIST-215 (3 Credits)

HCC Students who wish to receive college credits need to register for the History 215 (3 credits) course.
Celtic Ireland” - HIST-215 (3 Credits)
The student will be able to describe the his­tory and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to modern times.
The student will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon and British influences. Prerequisite: ENGL-121.

DETAILS

The cost of the program is $3,300*.
(Limited Financial Aid is available for HCC credit students.)

The $3,300* cost includes:
• Round-trip airfare.
• Transportation to and from the airport in Ireland.
• Room and some meals.
• All planned excursions, including entrance fees and transportation.

Additional costs not included in the program:
• Any Visa if needed.
• Personal expenses.

* HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.
