Ireland Scholars/Honors Study Abroad

PROGRAM

Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in Athlone, Ireland are pleased to offer a summer study abroad program specially designed for all HCC students that are part scholars and honors programs.  Participants will study for one week at HCC.  On the second week, students will travel to Ireland where they will spend two weeks at Athlone Institute of Technology.  The course will cover the culture and history of Ireland from ancient times to the present and will involve numerous excursions to important historical sites.

This study abroad program will involve significant walking.

SCHEDULE

Day 1: Course at HCC
Day 2: Course at HCC
Day 3: Course at HCC
Day 4: Course at HCC
Day 5: Depart for Ireland.
Day 6: Arrive in Dublin and settle into accomodations.
Day 7: Visit Dubliniana and Christ Church.
Day 8: Rebel Walking Tour of Dublin.
Day 9: Take the Guinness Brewery Tour and visit Kilmainham Goal.
Day 10: Depart for Athlone and visit Athlone Castle.
Day 11: Visit the Rock of Cashel and Cashel Folk Museum.
Day 12: Visit Galway City Museum and Cathedral of St. Nicholas.
Day 13: Open Day.
Day 14: Visit Limerick, Bishops Palace, Hunt Museum and King John’s Castle.
Day 15: Visit Carrowkeel Passage Tomb, Roscommon Castle and Sligo County Museum.
Day 16: Visit Clonmacnoise and Birr Castle.
Day 17: Visit Knowth and Trim Castle.
Day 18: Visit the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher.
Day 19: Depart for America.

Schedule is subject to change depending on prices and entrance availbility.

CREDITS

“Celtic Ireland” - HIST-215 (3 Credits)

HCC Students who wish to receive college credits need to register for the History 215 (3 credits) course.
The student will be able to describe the history and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to modern times. The student will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon and British influences.
Prerequisite: ENGL-121 or ENGL-101

DETAILS

The cost of the program is $3,100*.
(Limited Financial Aid is available for HCC credit students.)

The $3,100* cost includes:
•   Roundtrip airfare
•   Room and some meals
•   All planned excursions and entrance fees

*HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.
