Ireland Scholars/Honors Study Abroad

PROGRAM

Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) in Athlone, Ireland are pleased to offer a summer study abroad program specially designed for all HCC students that are part scholars and honors programs.  Participants will study for one week at HCC.  On the second week, students will travel to Ireland where they will spend two weeks at Athlone Institute of Technology.  The course will cover the culture and history of Ireland from ancient times to the present and will involve numerous excursions to important historical sites.

SCHEDULE

Day 1: Course at HCC

Day 3: Course at HCC
Day 4: Course at HCC               
Day 5: Course at HCC
Day 6: Departure for Ireland
Day 7: Arrival in Dublin and transfer to accommodations in Athlone and familiarisation tour of AIT.
Day 8: Walking tour of Athlone, visit Athlone Castle and St. Peter and Paul’s Church.
Day 9: County Roscommon tour, visit Roscommon Castle, Strokestown Park House and Irish Famine Museum.
Day 10: Bus trip to the Burren and Cliffs of Moher.
Day 11: Overnight trip to Belfast, visit Ulster Museum and Belfast Cathedral.
Day 12: “The Troubles” bus tour of Falls Road and Shankill Road.
Day 13: Day Trip to Dublin, tour Kilmainham Goal, tour Guinness Brewery, visit Christ Church Cathedral.
Day 14: Free Day.
Day 15: Free Day.
Day 16: County Westmeath tour, visit Clonmacnoise, visit Birr Castle Demnesne, tour Kilbeggan Distillery Museum.
Day 17: Day trip to Galway, visit Galway City Museum, tour the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas and Eyre Square Center.
Day 18:  Bus tour of County Meath, visit the Hill of Tara, tour New Grange and visit the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Center and Battle site.
Day 19: Day trip to Dublin, walk Temple Bar and Grafton Street, visit Trinity College and see the book of Kells, visit the National Museum.
Day 20: Farewell lunch, free afternoon.
Day 21: Return Home.
Schedule is subject to change depending on prices and entrance availbility.

CREDITS

“Celtic Ireland” - HIST-215 (3 Credits)
The student will be able to describe the history and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to modern times.  The student will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon and British influences. 
Prerequisite: ENGL-121 or ENGL-101.

DETAILS

The cost of the program is $3,100*.
(Limited Financial Aid is available for HCC credit students.)

The $3,100* cost includes:
•   Roundtrip airfare
•   Room and some meals
•   All planned excursions and entrance fees

*HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the Program Fee up to 10% due to increased program costs, increased flight costs, and/or, currency fluctuations.
