PROGRAM Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland, and The University of Durham, UK are uniting to provide a unique opportunity for students to undertake training in archaeological excavation and artifact interpretation at a site of international significance, located in Burgundy, France. Bibracte (http://www.bibracte.fr/index.php) was the capital of the Aedui tribe during the Iron Age and was conquered by Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars (c. 58-51 BC). Today, the site is the center for an archaeological park and museum and is home to a cooperative of European Universities who, supported by the French government, use the site as a training ground for young archaeologists as well as a centre for interpreting Gaulish culture for a popular audience. You will be working and socializing alongside students from a number of different countries including England, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Specific accommodations for all University teams are provided in a small village - Glux-en-Glenne – located at the base of the site. These include modern dormitories, a fully staffed cafeteria, research labs, classrooms and a research library. A small café/bar and a few houses are the only other buildings in the village.
You will spend a total on 14 days on-site. 12 days will be spent undertaking training in archaeological excavation, recording and artifact interpretation. Two days will be used for excursions to local towns. In addition, two days will be spent in Paris before flying home. Including flight time, students should expect to be away for a total of 18 days. In addition, students are expected to attend a five day training course (9am-12pm) in the week prior to departure. When on-site you will be working eight hour days, but you will have several scheduled breaks during the day. Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are provided for all students and instructors in the cafeteria. After dinner, students and instructors will often socialize at the café in the village, before heading to the dorms for much needed rest! CREDITS This study abroad program can be taken for college credit or as a non-credit experience. All students must attend a three day training course (9am-12pm) the week prior to departure. Students taking the program for college credit will earn three credits for ANTH 902 ‘Global Issues in Archaeology’ (HCC social science elective). Credit seeking students will be assessed during their training course and via a journal and two essays, to be completed on their return to the U.S. All participants, including those taking the program non-credit, are expected to participate in all activities of the program. As spaces are limited, all interested students must meet with the program director and fill out a short questionnaire before applying for the program.
