
PROGRAM Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland and the Arab Academy in Cairo, Egypt join hands in offering an exciting option for learning Arabic. Spend three weeks in Cairo studying Arabic at a premier language school and earn academic credits or a Certificate of Proficiency. With this study option you will fly to Egypt for three weeks to work with a professional staff of instructors on language acquisition, conversation skills and Egyptian culture. In Cairo you will be placed into a small class based upon your level of Arabic language proficiency. From Sundays through Thursdays there will be five hours of language instruction in MSA and colloquial Egyptian, conversation practice and study of culture. Arabic Academy's extensive experience in technology adds another dimension to learning the Arabic language. In the evenings and on the weekends there will be excursions and expeditions where you will have more opportunities to absorb the language and the culture of Egypt. Cairo An important city renowned for its historical and cultural heritage as well as for its natural beauty, Cairo has been called "the Paris of the Middle East". Students will experience the history of this city located on the Nile river as they visit the pyramids of Giza, vestiges of the Ottoman empire, the Coptic christian area of old Cairo and the Islamic center with its many mosques. The streets of Cairo delight with open cafes where men only smoke the shisha, small carts pass you by bringing in crops from the surrouding countryside and the small shops of the bazaars and market place invite you in to sample a mint tea while shopping for colorful scarves, copper lanterns or the glitter of belly dancing apparel.
