PROGRAM

Culture and Arts in China

Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland, Frederick Community College (FCC) and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) in Baltimore, Maryland, will offer a summer study program for learning Chinese culture, arts, history, and language. Participants will fly to China for three weeks with an HCC professor as Program Director and work with a team of Chinese professors including artists, academicians, and language teachers. This study program will involve significant academic course work and traveling.

Students have the opportunity to earn three credits for Fine Arts 102 (HCC) studying art, culture and history of China (or equivalent course at FCC and CCBC). The course, involves academic course work; hands on experiences; artists’ demonstrations; field trips to ancient artifact sites, museums, theatres, galleries and artists’ studios; visits with local Chinese families, and more.

Students also have the option of participating in the program on a non-credit basis. However, all participants, including those taking the program non-credit are expected to participate in all activities of the program.

Host Institution in Beijing

The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) will be our host institution. CAFA is the best Fine Arts institution in China. It was funded in 1918 and became the CAFA in 1950 and located in Chaoyang District Beijing. CAFA is not only the leading higher education institution in studio art, but it also a comprehensive school in Fine Arts. It offers a BFA, MFA, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in studio art, art history, and art theory. Its international education program is among the best in the country. CAFA will provide students with a unique opportunity to see and to participate in the art and culture of Beijing, and offer state of the art studio facilities, faculty, visiting artists, and the series of lectures on traditional, contemporary Chinese and international art. CAFA students have access to a rich array of galleries, museums, artists’ studios, and places of historical interests in Beijing and China.

SCHEDULE

Participants will spend the first ten days in Beijing , the capital of modern China and home of the Great Wall and Forbidden City, then will have about seven days traveling to Shanghai, the commercial center of China, and Xi’an, where the terracotta warriors were unearthed. After that, the group will return to Beijing for last phase of the program.
