studies conventions and charactertistics of these three genres of literature.  Students study terminology and literary concepts in order to interpret, analyze and critically evaluate short stories, poems and plays.  In addition, they are introduced to critical reading strategies, literary criticism, and an expanding literary canon which includes the work of culturally diverse writers-including a classic piece from Greek or Shakespearian theatre.  This courseis writing intensive.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

• Identify and apply literary terms, concepts, devices and characteristics in short stories,   poetry, and drama;
• Think critically and independently in interpreting short stories, poetry, and drama;
•  Analyze how literature reflects human values and thus has relevance to today’s world;
•  Describe the structural and language devices that are characteristic of the three genres studied;
• Write clearly and intelligently about literature;
• Communicate effectively an understanding of the literature and exchange ideas about literature;
• Perform basic leterary research and use MLA-style documentation;
• Understand and demonstrate the conventions of writing about literature;
• Read literature more effectively with an appreciation for the sound and rhythm of words.

Major Course Topics 

• The Short Story

Students will study at least seven short stories representative of several different periods of world literature, male and female perspectives (of authors and/or subject matter), and cultures (of authors and/or subject matter).

• Poetry

Students will study at least twenty poems representative of several different periods of world literature, male and female perspectives (of authors and/or subject matter), and cultures (of authors and/or subject matter).  The poems chosen for study will include a variety of poetic forms (e.g., sonnet, narrative, lyric).

• Drama

  Students will study at least one Greek or Shakespearean play and one other play.

Course Format

• ENGL-210 is not self-paced.
• It does not require on-campus meetings, except for taking the two exams in the HCC Test Center.
• It does not require real-time chats.  Conversations about the literature being studied take place each week on the DISCUSSION BOARD.

 Orientation

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation.

Course Requirements

• Review the "What you should know before you register" section of the Distance Learning Homepage.
• Read assigned literature.
• Complete weekly journal responses to the assigned literature.
• Post weekly responses to specific assignments and react to other students' responses (i.e., class discussion).
• Complete the two exams one on poetry in the HCC Test Center.
• Write one critical paper on the drama assisgnment.
• View one film on reserve in the HCC library (also available for rental at a local video store or for purchase at Amazon.com).
