Course Description

Like Arts, Cultures, and Ideas, this is a course that introduces art as a reflection of humanity-our diversity and our creative processes. The History of Modern Art will root the cultural achievements of the 20th Century in their historical settings, showing how the political, social, and economic events of the period influenced artistic creation. This course is a survey of the most important movements in Western Art from the late 19^th Century to the early 20th Century. The impact of Modernism on painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography will be covered. The student will learn the major artists and the influence that each art movement has on the next generation of artists. This is an important course for those who want to understand contemporary art. It also meets the oral presentation

Course Objectives

After completing this course you will be able to:

• Identify the important movements of Western Art from Impressionism to post 1945 Modernism.
• Describe the chronology of the movements and the influence of one on the next.
• Relate each movement to the historical, economic, and social events of the time.
• Identify the major artists that made lasting contributions to their art form and discuss the historical and the significance of their achievements.
• Demonstrate effective speaking so that others can understand the ideas expressed.
• Effectively deliver a formal oral presentation in front of a group.
