Description

In this introductory course, students learn to listen, speak, write and read at a basic level.  They also learn about the fiverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.  Instruction focuses on oral communicationand is supported by a computerized classroom and conversation specialists.  (4hours weekly in class and lab)

Statement on General Educaton and Liberal Learning

A liberal education prepares students to lead ethical, productive, and creative lives and to understand how the pursuit of lifelong learning and critical thinking fosters good citizenship.  General education courses form the core of a liberal education within the higher education curriculum and provide a coherent intellectual experience for all students by introducing the fundamental concepts and methods of inquiry in the areas of mathematics, the physical and natural sciences, the social sciences, the arts and the humanities, and composition.  This course is part of the general education core experience at Howard Community College.

Overall Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course students will:

1. Speak Spanish with correct pronunciation and intonation.
2. Comprehend simple oral questions and respond to them.
3. Use situational vocabulary in writing and speaking.
4. Demonstrate comprehension of basic vocabulary
5. Formulate questions.
6. Produce correct written language.
7. Understand short texts.
8. Appreciate the Spanish language as an expression of its many cultures.

1. Meeting and Greeting another person
2. University life (ser, AR verbs )
3. Family relationships (adjectives, tener)
4. House and home life (spelling change verbs)
5. Daily routine.(reflexive verbs)


Course Requirements

The grade for SPAN-101 will be based on criteria as stated on the syllabus of individual instructors.
A lab grade will be calculated into the final grade.

This course is an Arts and Science elective, a Humanities elective, and a Humanities core.
This course is a core requirement for languages.
This course fulfills the cultural diversity requirement.
