PSYC-101 General Psychology

This introductory course focuses on how psychologists conduct research on human behavior and ways to interpret the results.

Although the course activities of a TeleWeb course are conducted online, much of the course material is presented through pre-produced telecourse videos, which are the “Updated Discovering Psychology” series. Students will be required to view these videos. Videos are available through the HCC Library E-Reserves. DVD’s may also be borrowed from the HCC Library.

Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

1.       Summarize written material by describing the central idea and key points, by analyzing important definitions, and identifying psychological evidence (Critical Evaluative Reading).

 2.      Notice, understand, analyze and evaluate psychological information in the mass media (Critical Evaluative Thinking)

3.       Apply concepts to your own experiences (Applications).

4.       Write about personal learning on selected topics in psychology.

5.       Describe important concepts related to psychological research.

6.       Describe the problems of defining mental illness, some of the major types of mental illness, and the major ways to treat mental illness.

7.       Explain the influences and limitations on how we perceive.

8.       Explain how to modify and change attitudes and behaviors.

9.       Describe heredity and environment issues (Nature/Nurture).

10.     Describe selected topics from social psychological research.

11.     Compare the views and perspectives of the major contemporary perspectives in psychology:

             The Behavioral Perspective (and Social-Cognitive Perspective)
             The Psychodynamic Perspective
             The Humanistic and Positive Psychology Perspective
             The Cognitive Perspective
             The Physiological Perspective (including Evolutionary Psychology)
              The Behavioral/Cognitive Combination

12.    Demonstrate beginning skills as researchers and apply the scientific method.

13.    Learn about the groups and become cooperative group participants.

14.    Use research findings to improve study skills, time management skills, and learning.

15.    Communicate with effective and correct writing skills, using APA style, including citations and references.

16.    Practice academic honesty and avoid plagiarism.

 Course Format

This course is not self-paced. This course does require four on-campus meetings -- once for a face-to-face orientation, and again for three exams (Midterm, Final and Critical Thinking Exam). The communication in the course will take place through emails and threaded discussions.

Orientation There is no on-campus orientation for this class. Please log-on to the course during the first week of the term to begin the on-line orientation that is available for enrolled students.

Course Requirements

  1. Review the "Characteristics of Successful Online Students" and the "Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements" to be sure that you should be enrolling.
  2. Participation in weekly threaded discussions which are actually thirteen short papers requiring APA style citations and references.
  3. Evaluating Psychological Information (Critical Thinking) Booklet to be distributed at orientation; or accessed on line.
  4. Eleven on-line Quizzes (taken at home).
  5. Three exams required in on-campus test center, including a comprehensive final exam.

Exams

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has online quizzes. There are also proctored online midtern and final exams HCC Test Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. A proctored exam on the Evaluating psychological Information (Critical Thinking) workbook will be given at the Test Center.  The exams will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
