PSYC 101 General Psychology

Through this introduction to the field of Psychology, the student will be able to describe how psychologists do their research and gain an appreciation of how psychologists view people through studying the theories of Freud, Skinner, and Maslow. The student will be able to summarize, interpret and evaluate psychological information, especially as it appears in films and non-technical articles. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to describe psychological concepts and facts on the major topics and fields of psychology.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and understandings of the field of psychology.
  • Demonstrate preliminary knowledge of psychological theory, and concepts that influence human behavior.
  • Recognize the effect that psychology has on each of our individual lives, on society at large, and on our environment.
  • Describe concepts related to learning, intelligence, motivation, personality, and social behavior as they influence human existence.
  • Identify common psychological disorders and their associated charateristics.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of psychology in life development.
  • Identify different specializations and professions in the discipline of psychology.
  • Employ Critical Evaluative Reading to summarize written material
  • Employ Critical Evaluative Thinking to analyze and evaluate media sources.
  • Commicate effectively and credibly in writing while avoiding plagiarism.
  • Demonstrate beginning skills as researchers using the scientific method
  • Improve study skills, time management skills, and overall college preparedness.

You are required to know how to perform the following Canvas functions:

  • Send and reply to Class Mail within Canvas
  • Send and respond to attachments via Discussion Forums or Class Mail
  • Access labs and assignments, download, upload, and submit html and Word files
  • Create links to internet sites in Forum Discussions and Class Mail
  • Take online psychology quizzes and exams

 Select Discussion Forum choices, read and reply to Forum postings

Expected Class Behaviors:

  • Attendance: Weekly attendance in this on-line course is mandatory.  Students will be held responsible for all material assigned, presented, and discussed in class regardless of participation.  Students unable to participate in the class for an entire week must contact the instructor and make other arrangements.  If you are falling behind, please contact me before it’s too late.
  • All assignments are due at 8:00PM on Saturday at the end of the week. In the event of extenuating circumstances, when you are unable to meet the time frame for submission of work, you must make prior arrangements with the course instructor.  Since all assignments are posted at least three weeks in advance, exceptions to deadlines will be made only in the cases of documented emergencies when discussed and approved in advance by the instructor; Failure to do this will result in a zero grade for that assignment or exam.
  • Students will participate in class discussions online and complete projects.   Students are expected to review discussion postings frequently. You are responsible for any additional information posted on the discussion page. This is an important communication forum for information, and is an effective way for your instructor to communicate with you

 

  • Netiquette: While it is anticipated that professional students will behave with tact and courtesy on-line, the following guidelines for Internet etiquette should be followed.
  • The golden rule for communicating on-line is similar to the one we have been taught as children: don’t deliberately hurt another’s feelings (tact); imagine how you would feel in another person’s shoes (empathy); be human (humane). In the real world we can see facial expressions, gestures, and hear tone of voice.  We do not have that extra information on-line. It is easy to misinterpret the other person’s meaning.   Be cognizant of how you are communicating to your faculty and peers on-line
  • Flaming is an expression of a strongly held (usually negative) opinion without holding back emotion.  Please use tact. This on-line class does not allow flaming.
  • YELLING: Using all capital letters in your writing is considered yelling on-line. It is very annoying and not appropriate.  Please make sure your caps lock is off.
  • Flaming, yelling or inappropriate comments are considered disruptive to a professional learning environment. If you are angry or upset related to something in this class, make a private contact with the instructor and/or the individual with whom you have concerns.
  • Grading: A total of 1200 points will be available throughout the term and will be comprised of:

    • Discussion board readings, questions, and interactions.
    • Case studies, online activities, and labs.
    • Online examinations.

    Extra Credit:

    Though there are no formal extra credit assignments or projects, up to ten weekly bonus points may be awarded at the discretion of the instructor to students who turn in their assignments early, excel in the material, and go above and beyond the expected collegiate engagement level.

    Class Schedule:
    The class schedule operates on a weekly basis.  A course outline is posted for each unit of material which will cover 2-3 chapters per unit.  

    The week begins Sunday at Noon, and ends Saturday at 8:00PM.

Exam

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has online quizzes. There are also proctored online midterm, final, and Evaluating Psycholgical Information exams at the HCC Test Center. The exams will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
