HR 300 (Hickory Ridge)
Students will develop skill in the metric, apothecary and household systems of measurement. Drug calculation problems will provide the student with the opportunity to practice conversions between systems. Students will perform the computations necessary to administer medications in liquid, tablet, and capsule form.
MATH-060 or appropriate score on the Math and Reading Placement Test
Comment: Students who have only completed MATH-060 will find the online format very difficult.
After completing this course you will be able to
- Use the metric, apothecary and household systems of measurement.
- Convert from one system to another.
- Perform the computations necessary to administer reconstituted medications and oral medications in liquid, tablet or capsule form.
- Perform the computations necessary to administer injections and I.V. s
- Determine how much liquid is needed to dissolve dry powders so that he proper amount of the drug is administered.

Scientific Calculator with fraction key [a b/c] Although calculators are permitted in this course, EMT students should practice doing calculations without a calculator in order to prepare for their licensing exams.

- This class is not self-paced. Deadlines will be provided for each assignment and for completing tests and quizzes. This is a 7 week class.
- This class does not have required on-campus meetings, but tests must be taken at the test center.
- The course material is sequential. You will need to memorize the conversions listed on the conversion chart during the first week of class. Weekly on-line quizzes will help you gauge whether you understand the material. There is a specific timeline for the completion of each quiz in this class.
- Students should download the packet materials for each lesson. Unit 1 materials will be turned in to the test center when you take the midterm exam. Unit 2 materials will be turned in to the test center when you take the final exam. Late assignments will receive only 50% of the credit.
- There will be a one week interval where the midterm and final exam will be available at the test center. Students not taking the exams during this time frame will receive a zero. There are no make-up exams. Since correct answers are critical in dosage calculations, no partial credit is given on the exams.
- Some of the types of learning activities or assignments that the student will be required to complete are:
- Review the sample problems in the lessons and in the textbook.
- Use the CD to view example problems and to complete practice problems.
- Download practice pages; complete the assignment; turn in the entire unit at the test center.
- Questions on the packet problems will be discussed using the bulletin board. Students are expected to share solution tips with each other through the bulletin board.
- The calendar will list due dates for lessons, quizzes and exams. As mentioned above, worksheets and homework will be turned in at the test center when you take the midterm and final exam.
- There will be two exams and 5 on-line quizzes.

Contribution to Discussion on the Bulletin Board
NOTE: Students must complete all required assignments as outlined in order to pass the course.
- All assignments should be completed by the dates shown in the class syllabus and calendar. Quizzes and Tests must be completed by the deadlines.
- Weekly participation is required in this class. *
You are required to participate in the Bulletin Board Discussion prior to the Midterm and Final Exams. Additional questions may be posted there during the semester as needed.
Since this is only a one credit class, there is a midterm and a cumulative final exam. These exams must be taken at the test center during the scheduled week. There are no make-ups and no partial credit. Students may use a calculator, but you must memorize the conversions.Course Policies

Completing an online mathematics course is challenging. Complete the Diagnostic Test of Arithmetic on page 3 of the textbook. If you have any difficulty, you should consider taking a face-to-face section of this course.
