MATH 138 Statistic

In this course, students will develop the skills necessary to examine basic statistical terminology; develop pictorial and analytical distributions; and use statistical tables, a calculator, and a computer to calculate measures of central location and measures of variation. The student will additionally examine the normal distribution, correlation, and regression analysis, sampling, testing hypotheses, the chi square test and probability related to statistics. Classes will require use of a statistical computational package, stat-crunch.

MATH 070 (Intermediate Algebra) or higher or appropriate math placement score.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Use statistical tables, calculator and computer to solve certain problems
  • Calculate measures of central locations and measures of variation
  • Present data in a readable form gathered on a survey
  • Solve probability problems and make decisions based on given probabilities
  • Present various types of distribution and calculate their mean and standard deviation
  • Calculate a correlation and state its meaning
  • Calculate a regression equation
  • Test hypotheses
  • Find appropriate samples
  • Use the chi square test
  • Use a statistical computational package

Major Course Topics

  • Descriptive statistics- population vs. sample; data and data summarization; measures of central tendency, variation, location; Empirical Rule; 5 number summary and box plots; histograms; timeplots
  • Probability- discrete random variables; probability rules; normal distributions; the binomial; Central Limit Theorem; sampling
  • Inferential statistics- inferences about and hypothesis testing for mean, proportion, for one and two samples; Goodness of Fit; Tests of Independence

  • Is independent/guided study with firm assignment and exam deadlines.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings, except for exams. (For more information on taking exams, see the "Exams" section below.)

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course has three proctored unit exams and a comprehensive final exam at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exam will have a window of time during which it needs to be taken.
