HEED-213 Stress Management

This course will enable students to understand and apply principles of stress management. The concept of wellness and the role stress and stress management play in personal wellness development are examined.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Define basic concepts and definitions relevant to stress theory.
  • Describe the physiological response to stress.
  • Describe the impact stress has on health of the individual.
  • Identify personality factors and their role in stress.
  • Identify techniques and strategies for stress management.
  • Describe basic methods of relaxation.
  • Describe the impact negative health behaviors have on stress.
  • Describe the relationship stress management plays in the wellness concept.
  • Describe the relationship between exercise, nutrition, and stress.

Course Format

  • Is not self-paced.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings, except to take exams in the HCC Test Center.  (For more information about taking exams, see the “Exams” section below.)
  • Does not require real-time chats.
  • The communications will take place through Canvas mail, discussion board and weekly activity assignments.

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation. There is an online orientation on the course web site for all students. (Review the “Student Guide to Using Canvas” link on the eLearning home page).

Course Requirements

  • Review “What you should know before you register” section of the eLearning Homepage.
  • Three examinations are administered. All examinations are multiple choice.
  • Final paper on strategies for managing stress.
  • Student must be dedicated to practicing the relaxation techniques described in the textbook. (Student feedback is expected from the practiced technique each week).
  • The instructor may introduce additional relaxation techniques.

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course will have proctored exams at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exams will have a narrow flexible window of time during which it must be taken rather than a single date and time.
