HEED-106 Intro to Stress Management - Online

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of the concepts of stress management and the application of these concepts to personal stress management. Students will be presented with various tools and strategies for managing stress and will use these to develop an individual stress management plan.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Describe sources of stress.
  • Analyze the effects of stress on the human body.
  • Describe how to stress-proof your body.
  • Describe and demonstrate basic methods of relaxation.
  • Describe the impact negative health behaviors have on stress.
  • Describe the relationship stress management plays in the wellness concept.

Course Format

  • Is not self-paced.
  • Does not require on-campus meetings, except to take exams in the HCC Test Center
  • (For more information about taking exams, see the “Exams” section below.)
  • Does not require real-time chats.
  • The communications will take place through WebCT mail, discussion board and weekly activity assignments.

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation. There is an online orientation on the course web site for all students. (Review the “Student Guide to Using Canvas” link on the eLearning home page).

Course Requirements

  • Review "What you should know before you register" section of the eLearning Homepage.
  • Two exams and a final examination are administered. All examinations are multiple choice.
  • Final paper on strategies for managing stress.
  • Student must be dedicated to practicing the relaxation techniques described in the textbook. (Student feedback is expected from the practiced technique each week).
  • The instructor may introduce additional relaxation techniques.

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course will have proctored exams at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local region or at a regional institution for remote students. The exams will have a narrow window of time during which it must be taken rather than a single date and time.
