HEAL 110 - The Health Care Professional


This is an introductory course that provides an overview of the healthcare system. Through this course a student will gain background and perspective for selecting and entering a healthcare profession. Each will work through the content and objectives to:

  • Explore varied roles of health care professionals
  • Recognize signs of the impact of diversity and interpersonal relationships when working with others
  • Identify some legal and ethical implications of being a health care provider
  • Simulate application of these principles through online, threaded discussion and problem solving.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you will be able to:

Define Standard Precautions and discuss the implications for medical and surgical asepsis within the health care setting. Explore the Occupational Safety & Health Act guidelines as the standard for protection of health care providers.

Use medical terminology in reviewing case studies and documenting simulated events.

Examine the delivery of health care services in relationship to public health and safety.

Discuss professional, legal and ethical issues governing practice.

Apply therapeutic communication techniques to effectively meet the physical and psychological aspects of health care.

Identify stages of growth and development across the life span, including multicultural perspectives; and integrate the differences created by diversity and human nature with assessment and communication strategies.

Compare the roles of members of a health care team in the community or pre-hospital environment; acute care and long term care settings.

Analyze potential causes and effects of stress for the health care provider and demonstrate intervention techniques.

Describe equipment and special procedures being introduced to the health care delivery system with advances in technology.

Compare and analyze treatment priorities when responding with first aid or as triage to a mass casualty incident in the community.

Course Format

Is not self-paced. Students may work ahead at a self -governed learning speed; however, each must meet built-in deadlines for quizzes and assignments and complete the course by the end of the semester.

Does not require on-campus meetings except for the final exam, which is offered at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local area or at a regional institution by special arrangement for remote students. (For more information, see the “Exams” section below.)

Does not require real-time chats.

Communication will take place via private e-mail, through the course bulletin board, or directly by phone.

Each is required to communicate with the instructor and with groups of classmates as assigned. This will take place in an asynchronous, threaded discussion that will be required throughout the semester. Minimum frequency of access, three days a week.

Once you are notified by the instructor that you are entered in the online roster you may access and begin the course.

This course does not have a face-to-face orientation.  Online orientation is also provided for introduction to Canvas and for those specific computer applications that are required within the course. It is expected that the online student is sufficiently confident to follow online directions for use of computers. Academic Computer Support and campus computer labs are available to all students. Students are encouraged to seek the assistance of peers.

Course Requirements

Review the “What you should know before you register” section of the eLearning Homepage.

Meet the equipment and skill requirements for participation in online instruction. Check your CampusCruiser student email account during the week before classes begin for a message from your instructor.

Establish and maintain contact with the instructor to pose questions and to receive announcements and feedback.

Plan for about 6 hours study time per week, depending on computer literacy and personal learning habits. This time includes the sending and receiving of communications with instructor and classmates.

Complete study requirements by viewing online slide/note presentations and videos provided on electronic reserve, as well as reading text and “handouts” as assigned.

Arrange one six-hour personal clinical observation in a non-acute healthcare agency and report on the experience. Each student will select the setting with the approval of the instructor, contact the agency to schedule the visit, arrange to meet any prerequisite agency requirements, arrange proper dress and personal transportation.

Write assigned reports, utilizing the internet as a resource when indicated.

Take the online quiz for each of ten topics; and take a proctored final exam.

NOTE: This course is cleared for students with health care experience to test through via proficiency or challenge exams. (Text reading list and course syllabus are available on reserve in the library.) See college catalog for explanation of each type of credit by exam.

For purposes of verification and assessing learning outcomes, this course utilizes a variety of exercises as listed above. All assignments and quizzes are submitted online. The final is offered at the HCC Testing Center for students in the local area or at a regional institution by special arrangement for remote students. The exam will have a flexible window of time during which it needs to be taken rather than a single date and time.
