This course is an exploratory approach to the humanities, with a focus on the special role of the arts. The relation of the humanities to values — objects and events important to man are emphasized, and a basic distinction is made between the role of artists and that of other humanists. Artists reveal values; the other humanists study or reflect upon values.
Various art forms are explored individually — film, drama, music, literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture — with the relationships of subject matter, form, and content in each of these arts supplying the framework of the analysis.

Overall Course Objectives
Once you have completed this course you will be able to:
- Exhibit a keener awareness of values, self, and society.
- Develop critical skills that will be useful in making decisions that have a positive effect on self and society.
- Enhance personal stimulation and enjoyment.
- Appreciate the arts from a historical perspective, with emphasis on those periods and events that best reflect how man's thinking about himself has changed.
- Identify the elements that are basic to each art form, as well as those common to more than one and those that are unique to a particular art.
- Identify the form employed by the artists and interpret the meaning revealed in some specific works of art.
- Use evaluative criteria to help participate better with a work of art.

There are 30 half-hour lessons in this course. Before viewing each lesson, follow the "Assignments" section of each chapter of the Student Study Guide. This Study Guide is essential to the course as it coordinates the text readings with the videos. Essentially, the Student Study Guide presents the syllabus for the course. It will direct you to
- Read the "Overview" and "Learning Objectives" for each lesson.
- Consult the class glossary, a dictionary, and/or encyclopedia for definitions of specific terms.
- Read the Text Chapters that correspond with the lesson.
- Read the "Aids for Study" for each lesson.
- The "Assignments" section of each Lesson in the Study Guide will next direct you to view specific video program lesson. After viewing each video program, the Study Guide will direct you to
- Review what you have learned, using the "Aids for Study" again.
- Evaluate your learning with the "Review" Quiz", then check your answers with the "Answer Key" at the back of the guide. This quiz is a self-check. If you miss a queston, you will know that you need to review the appropriate sections of the lesson reading and video.
- There are 9 units in the course, including an Introduction and Epilogue. Students must participate in threaded discussions for each unit. See the assignment schedule for due dates.
- Each student will complete two fine arts related projects as described in the on-line syllabus. Each project will have both a participation and written component.
- There will be two exams, which must be taken in the Test Center. See assignment schedule and course contents-assignments for details.
