ENGL-115 Creative Writing

The student will read poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction and engage in the process of crafting such work by providing constructive feedback on the writings of others, and by receiving and implementing feedback from others.

Overall Course Objectives

Once you have completed this course you should be able to:

  1. Write grammatically correct and imaginatively constructed poems, short stories, and/or plays.
  2. Provide constructive feedback on the writings of others.
  3. Read one's own poetry and fiction.
  4. Read one's own poetry and fiction more effectively (silently and/or aloud) with an appreciation for the sound and rhythm of words.
  5. Use literary devices and/or characteristics employed in the writing of poetry and fiction such as images, metaphor, characterization, theme, and setting.
  6. Revise one's own writing as part of the writing process. A strong emphasis will be placed on the revision of one's work.
  7. Compare and contrast traditions, styles, forms, and conventions of writing.
  8. Communicate effectively an understanding of other students' writing and exchange ideas about the writing.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of how writing reflects the human spirit in aesthetic forms and humanistic ideas.

Course Format

Is not self-paced. There is a definite schedule with definite due dates.

Does not require on-campus meetings.
Does not require real-time chats
Does not have a face-to-face orientation.
Requires access to Internet and Canvas.
 

Course Requirements (occurring on-line in Canvas)

Access to Internet and Canvas required. Specific assignments and procedures for evaluating student performance in the class (i.e., grading) will be determined by the individual faculty member, but will include the following:

  1. Writing and revision of one's work and the reading of one's work to the class.
  2. Constructive feedback on the writings of others is an important component of the course.
  3. Continuous writing is required, including creative writing exercises.
  4. At least 70% of the final grade will be based upon one's writing.

There are no exams; however, there are writing assignments and exercises each week, in addition to an end of semester writing portfolio submission.
